Obama votes early in Chicago hometown
CHICAGO (AP) ? President Barack Obama has cast his ballot early, returning to his hometown of Chicago to drum up support for early voting.
The president says, "all across the country we're seeing a lot of early voting." He says it was "really convenient" but jokes, "I can't tell you who I voted for."
Obama signed forms and showed his driver's license at a South Side Chicago voting site and then voted at a blue voting machine.
It was the first time a sitting presidential nominee voted early and reflects the Obama campaign's strategy to encourage as many voters as possible to vote early or by absentee ballot.
About 35 percent of the electorate is expected to vote before Election Day.

Rome Mayor proposes 5% property tax hike

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - In order to balance the 2013 Rome City Budget, Mayor Joseph Fusco says he is proposing a 5% property tax hike.Mayor Fusco says that as a result of rising health care and pension costs, teamed with decreasing state aid, the tax hike is the only way to balance the $40.9 million budget without compromising the city's services.
"Unfortunately, now the reserves are to the point where we just can't keep taking out of the bank," Mayor Fusco said. "We've got to start putting something into it. We got to start rebuilding our revenue."
The proposed property tax hike would mean a $1 increase for every $1,000 that an individual home is worth.
The average home in the City of Rome is assessed at $63,000, which equals out to an increase of roughly $63 a year.
Some local residents said the proposed hike is just too much to handle.
"I think we are going to have to move to a smaller house in a smaller county because we can't afford it anymore," said resident Drew Savoie.
The last thing Savoie wants to do is move off his quiet street, but he says the Mayor's proposal may leave him without a choice.
Due to state law capping property tax increases at 2%, the Rome Common Council will need to vote in order to override the cap. As of now, Mayor Fusco said he doesn't have the support.
However, he said he will have to work with the Council to reach some sort of a compromise.
The council will be voting on whether to override that 2% property tax cap on Wednesday, October 24 and then the final budget must be passed by December 31.

NJ mom denies hitting boy she says bullied girl
TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) ? A New Jersey woman who says her 9-year-old daughter was bullied took matters into her own hands and confronted one of the students she says harassed the girl. Now, the mother is facing assault charges, even though she denied touching or hitting anyone.
Rebecca Sardoni and her mother boarded a school bus Friday morning bound for East Dover Elementary School, looking for a boy they claimed had been bullying her daughter on the bus.
From that point, there are conflicting versions of what happened next.
Several students on the bus said Rebecca Sardoni then cursed at the boy and slapped him and a boy seated next to him while her mother yelled at the two boys, Toms River Police Chief Michael G. Mastronardy told The Asbury Park Press.
Rebecca Sardoni, 28, of Toms River, and her mother, 51-year-old Stephanie Sardoni, of Beachwood, were arrested Friday and released on summonses. Rebecca Sardoni is charged with simple assault, criminal trespass and making terroristic threats. Stephanie Sardoni is charged with criminal trespass.
Rebecca Sardoni told The Associated Press on Sunday that she regretted boarding the bus, but she denied touching or hitting anyone.
"I was upset. I wasn't crazy woman upset," she said. "I don't put my hands on my own kids. I would have never put my hands on anyone's kid."
Sardoni said her daughter is upset and nervous about going to school Monday. She said she's considering sending her daughter to a new school but knows for sure that the girl won't be taking the bus anymore.
"It's crazy that this got blown into me doing something wrong ? me and my family ? when this is my daughter that is the victim," Sardoni told the AP.
Sardoni said she took matters into her own hands after school officials ignored complaints that her daughter, who is also in fourth-grade, had been verbally and physically bullied by four students. She said her mother merely stood at the front of the bus with the driver.
School officials couldn't be reached Sunday by the AP.
The boys were treated by nurses from Toms River Regional Schools for cuts to their mouths. One of the boys was taken by his parents to a local hospital for treatment of a neck injury, Mastronardy said.
The stepfather of one of the boys ? who have not been named because of their ages ? told the newspaper his stepson had a cut on his lip after Rebecca Sardoni slammed his head against the bus window.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death ? Forgotten Films
I grew up in the in Chicago area. Lots of people, lots of buildings, lots of activity. My wife grew up in a more rural area. One time, early in our marriage, I admitted to her that, at times, I find being out in the country, away from the bustle of the city, to be a bit scary. I like the comfort of knowing that there?s a grocery store just down the road, an emergency room not far away, and a fast food establishment every few blocks. If you?re like me, and occasionally find the country a bit creepy, then today?s movie, 1971?s ?Let?s Scare Jessica to Death,? may not be for you.
The film concerns a woman named Jessica (Zohra Lampert) who is recovering from a nervous breakdown. It?s unclear what she has been going through, but it seems to involve seeing and hearing people who are not really there. In an attempt to help her get back to normal, she and her husband, Duncan (Barton Heyman), leave New York City and purchase a farm in Connecticut. Their friend Woody (Kevin O?Connor) comes with to help them settle in.
Upon arrival, Jessica thinks she sees someone lurking around the house. At first she is afraid she is seeing things again, but Duncan sees it as well. They end up finding a young woman named Emily (Mariclare Costello), a squatter who has been living in the empty house. At first, Emily prepares to leave the new owners to their home, but Jessica and Duncan decide to ask her to stay. It?s the early 70?s after all?peace, love, togetherness, all that.
The house is quiet and peaceful and everyone seems to be settling in. Woody is beginning to tend to the orchard and every now and then everyone goes for a dip in the pond. That is, until Jessica gets spooked by what appears to be a white clothed figure reaching for her in the water.
Now, since these city folk don?t seem to have any jobs, they decide they need to sell some of the antiques in the house so they can get some dough. Duncan and Jessica load up a bunch of stuff to take to an antique dealer, including a strange picture of the family that once owned the house in a huge metal frame. The men in town, who all sport strange bandages, are none too willing to help them find an antiques dealer, but soon they do find a place. The dealer at the shop, tells them that the home they purchased once belonged to a family which included, legend has it, a vampire. Now that?s the way to cure Jessica of her nervous breakdown.
Back at the home, things start to get stranger. One day, Jessica spots a strange girl (Gretchen Corbett) who beckons for Jessica to follow her. She leads her to a waterfall where they find the dead body of the antiques dealer. When Jessica leads Duncan back to the spot, the body is gone. Meanwhile, both Woody and Duncan begin to have relationships with Emily?who is beginning to act stranger and stranger. You know, biting people?s necks and stuff.
While looking around in the attic, Jessica notices that Emily looks an awful lot like the girl in the old family picture, which has mysteriously reappeared at the house after the death of the antiques dealer. When the two ladies go for a swim, Emily reveals herself to be the 100-year-old vampire. Now, Jessica struggles to find a way to escape Emily and the undead townsfolk.
?Let?s Scare Jessica to Death? is a very different sort of horror flick. It?s not bloody or gory and builds to it scary moments at a very slow pace. It has a bit of a film school feel to it, at times lingering a bit too long on a pretty shot or a scene that doesn?t really advance the story at all. I will say, though, that the photography is impressive, but it does throw off the pacing a bit. Still, as the film reaches it?s climax, it does succeed in becoming quite scary.
There is an interesting subtlety to the performances in the film. Zohra Lampert is very believable as someone who has been through a mental breakdown and still questions whether the things she sees truly exist. It?s really helped along by the fact that we can often hear the dialogue going on in Jessica?s head, both her voice and the other voices she hears. Likewise, Mariclare Costello is very intriguing as she slowly builds a quietly creepy performance.
Probably many modern viewers will find parts of the film somewhat frustrating. I certainly did. It requires a lot patience on the part of the viewer. In some respects the slow pace of the film works, and in others it doesn?t, but the final payoff ends up being pretty darn good. It?s a unusual little film that just goes to prove that I?m right about the country being a creepy place.

AMD to cut nearly 1,800 jobs or 15 pct of workers
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) ? Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it will cut nearly 1,800 jobs, about 15 percent of its workforce, by the end of the year in order to reduce spending in the face of dwindling sales.
AMD is the world's second-biggest maker of microprocessors for personal computers and PC sales are falling. That's partly due to more consumers shifting away from PCs and doing their computing on tablets and smartphones.
CEO Rory Read says AMD needs to quickly restructure its business because trends that are reshaping the PC industry are happening faster than the company expected.
The job cuts were announced as AMD, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., reported that its revenue tumbled 25 percent in its fiscal third quarter that ended Sept. 29.

Last week, The New York Daily News reported that Michelle Schindelheim, 47, a teacher in NYC, was recently disciplined after she admitted?ordering?her students at Bronx Middle School 301 to pray to Jesus. Administrators first took notice of the church-state violation in March 2011, after students complained that?Schindelheim was forcing Christian prayers on them.

According to her?pupils, right before Christmas 2010, the English as a Second Language teacher apparently stopped class and asked her students to speak to the Christian savior. Not only were the youngsters told to talk to the Lord, but she apparently also asked them to ?sit in a circle and sing? as well.
The students reportedly recited the Lord?s Prayer in Spanish and?Schindelheim?called her priest, putting him on speakerphone so that he could hear the prayers. And, to add icing to the?proverbial?cake, she also asked her class to ?re-enact scenes from the life and death of Jesus.?
When she was later questioned about the incident, the teacher, who has been instructing in the city for the past 21 years, confessed to the aforementioned allegations.?Schindelheim told officials that she now recognizes that it was a bad idea, The Daily News reports. She credited her actions to extreme stress that she was experiencing in her personal life at the time.
The veteran teacher also admitted that she knew this sort of curriculum wasn?t appropriate for public school students. Not long after the incident took place, Schindelheim?took a medical leave. While the district inevitably disciplined her,?she has been permitted to keep her job, but was given a letter in her file as a result of the incident.
Considering the ongoing battles that rage over the separation of church and state, the teacher?s actions were clearly controversial. While some would have advocated for her dismissal, the district chose to keep her on staff.

Rain postpones Yankees-Tigers Game Four
DETROIT (Reuters) - Rain forced the postponement of Game Four of the American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, ensuring baseball's most successful franchise staved off post-season elimination for another day.
The Yankees, trailing the best-of-seven series 3-0, arrived at Comerica Park needing a win to extend their season but got a reprieve when a storm rolled into Detroit moving Game Four to a 1607 EST (2007 GMT) start on Thursday.
With the storm approaching, officials initially pushed back the start rather than have to call a rain delay and face a messy finish to a potential series clincher.
Major League Baseball said it made the decision "in an effort to preserve the integrity of an uninterrupted full nine inning game". They said Game Five would be played on Friday if necessary.
Certainly the decision not to start the game was welcomed by the Yankees, who will have ace CC Sabathia, fresh and ready to take to the mound on Thursday.
Had the game started and been interrupted by rain the Yankees might have only gotten a few innings work out of their big lefthander.
Sabathia (2-0, 1.53 ERA) has been one of the few bright spots in a gloomy post-season for the punchless Yankees, who are trying to avoid being swept from a series for the first time in 32-years.
Max Scherzer is expected to remain the Game Four starter for the Tigers.
"It didn't matter to me whether we pitch at 8 or 10," Scherzer told reporters. "We were ready to play.
"It's not frustrating, it's rain. It's just the way it is."
While the Tigers were able to take the postponement in stride, a capacity crowd expecting to see Detroit clinch its first trip to the World Series in six-years left disappointed.
But history remains with the Tigers with the 2004 Boston Red Sox the only team to claw their way back from a 3-0 deficit to win a postseason series.
The postponement could allow Yankees manager to tinker with his lineup after benching sluggers Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson for Wednesday's do-or-die contest.
The Yankees posted the best record in the American League during the regular season but their power-hitting lineup has struggled to score runs during the playoffs, prompting Girardi's reshuffle.
Rodriguez, Major League Baseball's highest-paid player with earnings this season of $29 million, stands fifth on the all-time home run list with 647 but has looked lost since returning after breaking his hand.
"He has struggled against right-handers all season," said Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
"It's obviously gotten worse here in the postseason with the strikeouts, so we're just making an adjustment and hoping it gives us a better shot."
Rodriguez, who has been pinch-hit for and benched previously in the playoffs, has gone 3-for-23 in the postseason.

Ministers will be forced to explain to MPs a pledge by the prime minister to make gas and electricity suppliers to offer customers their lowest tariffs.
The statement, expected at 10:30BST, follows an urgent question by Labour, who have been critical of the policy.
David Cameron told MPs that legislation would be brought before Parliament, amid concern over rising energy bills.
But later the Department for Energy said it was looking "at all options" to help customers get the best tariff.
BBC industry correspondent John Moylan says that on the face of it Mr Cameron's announcement on Wednesday amounts to a major change in energy policy - instead of consumers having to seek out the best deals, firms would have to give customers the lowest tariff.
But there is still little detail on how this would actually work, our correspondent says.
One suggestion is that a supplier would send a letter outlining a better deal a customer would be automatically switched to - unless they opted out.
The main energy firms say they knew nothing of the plan or of the government's intention to put this into legislation in the forthcoming Energy Bill.
But on Wednesday night, our correspondent adds, the Department of Energy and Climate Change was playing down suggestions that companies would be forced to move customers onto cheaper deals.

Mr Cameron said it would be "welcome" news for households facing rising energy costs.
But speaking later on BBC Two's Newsnight programme, shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint suggested confusion surrounded the policy.
"The truth is... this policy isn't going anywhere because the prime minister actually announced a policy that within 10 hours has disappeared," she said.
Ms Flint added that there was a need for more competition within the energy sector.
She said: "We need a more competitive market. Six companies dominate 99% of the customer base in the UK. So what do we need? We need a tougher regulator, and we have announced that we would abolish Ofgem and have a tougher regulator.
"We need transparency, so we can see when companies say 'We can't do this because we need to invest', whether what they are saying is right. And we need to know that when wholesale prices go down they pass on those cuts to the consumers."
Consumer group uSwitch, which runs a price comparison website, said the policy announced by the prime minister would actually disadvantage consumers.
Anne Robinson, director of consumer policy, said: "This has to be a mistake - the unintended consequences would be to kill competition."
She said there would be "no spur, no choice, no innovation and no reason for consumers to engage any more".
But Stephen Fitzpatrick, from Ovo Energy, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the announcement was "great news" for consumers and would help break the "stranglehold" of the big six energy companies.
"Competition in the energy market has never been so poor... I don't see that consumers are going to lose out from this at all. I think most people will see their bills come down," he said.
"I think some of the larger energy companies might withdraw some of their subsidised deals, but what you're going to see is this surge of competition from independent energy companies."
