30,000 pizzas on way to troops in Afghanistan

What could be the largest pizza delivery of all time departed from left Franklin Park on Thursday.

Some About 30,000 pizzas left DHL Express, 10451 W. Waveland, at 8 a.m. on their way to U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The cargo could fill half of a 747 aircraft.

The frozen pizzas were prepared at the behest of retired Master Sgt. Mark Evans of Elk Grove. Evans came up with the idea in the spring of 2008.

?We were sitting at the dinner table on a Friday night,? Evans said. ?The war was on TV. My son said, do they have pizzas there??

Evans thought that was a fine idea. He emailed U.S. Gen. David Petraeus, who then was commanding general of multinational forces in Iraq, who is now the CIA director.

?He answered in 12 hours: I love pizza. Send our guys pizza,? Evans said.

Within five weeks, Evans had formed Pizza 4 Patriots and had raised enough money for 2,000 pizzas. DHL Express, an international shipper, volunteered to ship the pizzas to servicemen troops in Iraq in time for Independence Day.

They ship a growing number of pizzas twice a year ? during the Super Bowl and Fourth of July.

Great Kitchens of Romeoville, which prepared the deep-dish pizzas this year, is still figuring out the bill, possibly as much as $300,000.

Orientation basically refers to sexual orientation, e.g, heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual and so on and so forth. As for the residency, just describe where your character is living or the immediate area they inhabit.

They're still work in progresses and aren't near completion, but they'll give you a kind of feel for what we're looking for and hopefully answer anymore of you questions regarding the CS :P

How ants enlist emergency help

Brazilian "big-headed" ants use chemical trails to drag others into helping them carry food, a study shows.

Researchers found that when an ant discovered food that was too large to carry, it immediately set off for the nest, laying a pungent chemical trail.

This almost instantly caused hundreds of other ants to rush in and help drag back the oversized snack.

The team thinks the species' "chemical breadcrumb trail" is the fastest and most accurate ever recorded.

The findings from this study are reported in the journal Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology.

Only ants and humans are able to "organise themselves into teams" to lift heavy objects.

Although many ant species use chemical trails to organise themselves into food-collecting groups, the big-headed ant has an "extreme" chemical enlisting strategy, says the University of Sussex team.

Tomer Czaczkes, the scientist who led the study - and who filmed the ants at work in the forests of Brazil - said that the insects were "incredibly accurate" when it came to following the trail laid down by a fellow forager.

"When an ant finds something delicious," he said, "she has to lay a trail really quickly, because competition is fierce.

"The pheromone trail starts working immediately. Any ants caught in its net are funnelled towards the food item."

In their experiments, Dr Czaczkes and his colleagues left food items outside an ants' nest and filmed the reaction.

When one "scout ant" found the food, it would try to move it, give up and return to the nest, laying the pheromone trail on its way back.

Within two seconds, other ants would emerge from the nest and start following the scent to the food item.

This strong-smelling trail decays quickly, lasting just six minutes. This is a crucial part of its purpose, as it does not lure ants from the nest pointlessly, after a food has gone.

"That's important, because for an ant, it's dangerous to be out of the nest," said Dr Czaczkes.

But because the trail also intercepted ants that were already outside the nest - dragging them towards the food item, the tiny, industrious insects were able to retrieve food up to 8m from their nest.

Highways-student loan deal poised for votes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican leaders pushed a sweeping highways-student loans package salvaging millions of construction jobs and maintaining low interest rates on millions of new college loans toward a House vote Friday even as conservative groups mounted a last-minute and likely futile campaign against it.

Favorable action by the Senate on what would be the only big jobs measure Congress has enacted this year was assured. Leaders said they hoped get it done Thursday night, but then ran into procedural hurdles that pushed back a vote until Friday. Lawmakers in both parties hoped to get an early start bragging about a rare accomplishment four months before the election.

The conservative Heritage Action for America and the anti-tax Club for Growth urged a "no" vote on the bill in emails Thursday to lawmakers, warning that it will be counted as a key vote on their legislative scorecards.

"This massive bill spends too much money, will continue taxpayer bailouts for highway spending and keeps subsidies that have contributed directly to skyrocketing tuition rates," Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller said.

Despite the backlash from such core conservative groups, the bill's supporters expressed confidence. "We got a pretty good reception in conference this morning," Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania said after House Republicans met on the bill.

After three months of haggling, House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on the package Wednesday. It includes a two-year, $100 billion spending plan for highway and mass transit construction and repairs, $6 billion to prevent rates on new student loans after from doubling after Saturday, and a five-year renewal of federal flood insurance subsidies.

The bill gives states more flexibility over how they spend federal highway aid, consolidates transportation programs and shortens environmental delays to get highway projects built faster. It also expands a loan guarantee program aimed at increasing private investment in infrastructure projects.

Democrats and Republicans each gave way on issues important to their political constituencies, but both sides also scored victories. Republicans sacrificed proposals to force a go-ahead with the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the Midwest and to prevent the Obama administration from regulating coal ash as a hazardous toxin. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections blamed for stalling some road projects and safety, biking and pedestrian programs.

House Republican leaders pitched the package to their members in a closed-door meeting Thursday morning that was interrupted by news of the Supreme Court's health care decision.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said some conservatives have doubts about voting for the package after House negotiators dropped a House-passed provision requiring the government to approve the Canadian border-Gulf Coast Keystone pipeline. President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it included the pipeline measure.

But Cassidy said, "There's also concern among conservatives to have a decent infrastructure and some certainty for our (state transportation departments) back home and our contractors so they can build roads.... It is a mixed bag. I will just tell you that." He said he was still undecided on how he would vote.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the influential House Republican Study Committee, will vote against the package, his office said.

Florida Republican Rep. Steve Southerland, one of the deal's negotiators, said he expects the package to win passage, explaining that no one has argued a short-term extension is in the nation's best interest and that contractors want and deserve certainty. "I think we will have the votes," he said.

Without the bill or a short-term extension, federal aid transportation aid to states would expire, as well as the government's ability to collect federal gasoline and diesel taxes ? 18.4 cents a gallon and 24.4 cents, respectively ? that fund most of those programs. Democrats estimate that would cost an existing 1.8 million transportation-related jobs, as well as forgo another estimated 1 million jobs the bill would create.

Similarly, interest rates for on new subsidized Stafford loans for college students would double to 6.8 percent beginning Sunday. It protects 5.6 million households and businesses and addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

Problems with out-of-date or poorly functioning ERP software?often are abundantly clear to anyone working within the system. But a disconnect can arise when those tasked with making decisions about the ERP system don?t actually use the ERP system. After all, it?s a lot easier to make the wrong determination when one only hears about ? rather than experiences ? all of the issues created by the existing software (or lack thereof).

As a kind of hinge between the everyday operations of the company and the C-suite, directors typically find themselves having to educate the executive level not just about the value of ERP systems in general but the importance of conducting ERP implementations the right way. This is as critical as it is tricky. After all, no ERP implementation succeeds without executive buy-in and support. On the other hand, no executive likes being told what to do.

The key to it is simple: show how a new or updated ERP system can save the organization time and money and you?ve got yourself a deal. The harder part is assigning metrics to what can be a somewhat nebulous return ? especially when discussing something as ?soft? as organizational change management or training. After all, how much does it truly cost the company when Joe in Accounting only learns 45-percent of the ERP functionality he needs? What about when Donna?s boss in Purchasing turns a blind eye when she decides to go ahead and continue using Excel instead of the ERP system?

The easy way out of this estimation conundrum is to cut all or most of the organizational change management activities and focus instead on the technical installation aspects. After all, everyone knows that it?s bad if the system doesn?t work and it?s good if it does and can assign numbers to either scenario. Change management? Can be hard to quantify and thus, hard to justify.

Distressingly, organizations consider this ?technology-only? approach far more than you might think. In Panorama?s expert opinion, however, it?s 100-percent wrong. Some points to consider:

ERP failure hardly is ever caused by a technical malfunction; it?s caused by lack of usage and adoption. It?s caused by people who don?t know how to use it right, by people who don?t trust it, and by people who don?t care what impact their misuse or nonuse has on the organization on a whole.

Organizational change management is as critical to the success of the project as the technical installation but it?s a whole lot easier to screw up. While a technological mishap will quickly be sorted out, the impacts of how organizational change management is handled will affect the organization for all the years it relies upon the system.

Organizational change starts from the top. If executives don?t see the value in using the ERP system the right way (or in the system at all), then end-users won?t either. Messaging from the top-level has to be both frequent and consistent. Further, they have to mean it.

While it might be challenging to express these notions to the C-suite, it?s necessary for the health of both the ERP implementation and the organization on a whole to give the guys and gals upstairs some tough love. BOSTON - Cody Ross hit two homers and drove in five runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 9-4 Sunday in a game that probably was Kevin Youkilis' farewell to the Fenway Park fans.

Youkilis, a subject of recent trade rumors, was lifted for a pinch-runner after hitting a triple in the seventh inning. After the game, manager Bobby Valentine said general manager Ben Cherington told him "there is a situation brewing" before Youkilis' at-bat.

Youkilis was greeted with a hug from Nick Punto, who pinch-ran for him, and many of his teammates on the top step of the dugout.

The burley infielder, in his ninth season with the Red Sox, took his helmet off and waved to the crowd, blew a kiss and was urged to come out for a curtain call by his teammates before heading down the steps. He was given a lengthy standing ovation and the fans chanted "Yook."

The nameplate above Youkilis' locker was gone in the clubhouse after the Red Sox's the ninth win in 11 games. Boston completed interleague play with a winning record for the eighth straight season (11-7).

Jason Heyward continued his torrid June for the Braves, hitting a solo homer among his three hits.

Atlanta, which lost for the ninth time in 13 games, closed interleague play 8-10.

Aaron Cook (1-1), making just his second start with the Red Sox and first since going on the disabled list May 6 after sustaining a cut on his left knee covering home plate, gave up three runs - two earned - six hits and didn't walk or strike out anyone in five innings.

Braves starter Mike Minor (3-6) gave up three homers and allowed seven runs - four earned - in 4 2-3 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer for Boston, which won six of seven series against NL opponents.

Heyward is hitting .391 this month with five homers and 12 RBIs.

Cook filled-in for Clay Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what Valentine called a "gastrointestinal issue."

The Red Sox jumped ahead with a four-run fourth against Minor. After breezing through the first three innings allowing just a pair of singles, Minor walked the first two batters in the inning. Ross then homered into the first row of seats above the Green Monster, making it 3-0. One pitch later, Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0.

The Braves capitalized on Cook's throwing error for a run during a three-run fifth. Eric Hinske had a two-run double into the center field triangle after Heyward and Andrelton Simmons singled. Juan Francisco then bounced back to the mound and Cook had Hinske off the bag, but threw widely past third to allow him to score to make it 4-3. Cook retired the next three batters, finishing his work.

In the fifth, Boston scored three unearned runs off Minor when Will Middlebrooks had a sacrifice fly and Ross followed with a two-run homer completely out of Fenway Park over the Monster, making it 7-3. Simmons had a throwing error on Kelly Shoppach's grounder to open the inning when he fired the ball into the Red Sox dugout.

Heyward homered off Matt Albers in the sixth.

NOTES: Valentine decided to give recently struggling DH David Ortiz (0 for 11 last three games) a day off with a left-hander starting for Atlanta. "He said he could probably use it," Valentine said. With Ortiz out, hot rookie Middlebrooks moved to DH and Youkilis was back at third. Youkilis was given a lengthy ovation when he came to plate the first time. ... Hinske started just his 20th game this season for Atlanta, and doubled and tripled his first two times up. ... Former Atlanta pitcher John Smoltz was on hand working the nationally televised game and spent time pregame chatting with players in the Braves' clubhouse. ... Braves 3B Chipper Jones, who had the day off, is hitting just .189 (7 for 37) since coming off the DL on June 10. ... Obama, Romney Both Winners at Latino Conference

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- A high-profile gathering of Latino public officials turned out to be a win-win for President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, according to interviews with those who attended. Democrats did not take Obama to task for waiting so long to stop deportations of young illegal immigrants, and Republicans expressed relief at Romney?s presence and softer tone.

?I think people are ready to give both of them, really both of them some pass,? said Ron Garcia, a Republican from Southern California and a member of the board of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. ?There?s some time now to digest what the two candidates have to offer.?

The fast-growing Latino community is a pivotal voting bloc in several battleground states, including Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia, North Carolina and Arizona. Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote in 2008 and is doing even better than that in some polls this year. Analysts estimate that Romney needs to win as much as?40 percent of the Latino vote to win the White House, a goal he is not reaching in several states and one made harder by the tough immigration rhetoric he and other Republican candidates employed during the primaries.

Obama?s standing with Latinos was reflected in the enthusiastic cheers and multiple standing ovations he received at NALEO. Better yet for him: the only subject that came close to generating as much fervor as his new policy on undocumented youth was his mention of the Affordable Care Act, a toxic subject in much of the country.

?I was very moved by it,? said Mary Rose Wilcox, a Maricopa County supervisor from Phoenix, Ariz. ?I saw a toughness that I had not seen the last time he came to NALEO and I like that a lot, because he has done so much -- in terms of not only what he did with the executive decision (on young immigrants) but also with the economy.?

Her chief of staff, Terri Leija, said Obama?s speech motivated her to get out the vote.

While Obama had a natural advantage at the conference, Romney benefitted from offering his own ideas for immigration reform in front of a polite, if unenthusiastic audience. His proposals, aimed in part at keeping families together and highly educated foreign students in the United States, allowed him to move away from his much-scorned ?self-deportation? language and reintroduce himself as a general-election nominee sympathetic to the concerns of Latino voters.

?I was a little upset with him over some of the harshness with respect to immigration in the past, ?but what he said today was something I find appealing,? said Juan Zapata, a self-described moderate Republican who chairs the NALEO Education fund. ?Softening that rhetoric with regards to immigration will definitely go a long way towards helping Republicans.?

If Romney?s speech was part of the learning process of how to speak to Hispanic voters, ?he?s on the right track,? said Longwood, Fla., city councilman Bob Cortes, a Republican.

Key to the satisfaction of several Republicans at the conference was a sense that Romney did not outright reject the ideas behind the DREAM Act, legislation that would create a path to citizenship to people brought to the United States illegally as children, if they pursue a college education or military service.

However, several Democrats -- including Obama -- pointed to Romney?s emphatic opposition to the DREAM Act during the primary campaign. Many called Romney?s ideas vague and accused him of deliberately avoiding saying whether he would overturn Obama?s new policy of letting young undocumented immigrants apply for temporary deportation reprieves and work permits (Romney said in his speech he would propose comprehensive reform that would ?supersede? Obama?s order).

?This is clearly a contrast between action and words,? said Texas State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, a Democrat. ?We heard a bunch of great ideas about immigration policies, but we know that when Gov. Romney is fundraising in other parts of the country, he talks about vetoing the DREAM Act, building walls, doing things that take Latinos back for generations.?

Many gave Romney credit for appearing at the conference even with the knowledge that the crowd would be largely comprised of Democrats supportive of Obama. ?I think he basically showed them that he did care one way or another, he did believe in the Latino vote and that he did believe that immigration is an issue,? said Republican political consultant Esteban Ferreiro. ?I think he did what he needed to do within his beliefs.?

Even Democrats like Utah State Senate minority leader Ross Romero said Romney?s intentions seemed sincere, even if his policy proposals were too general. ?The fact that he spent 20 minutes, 30 minutes walking the rope line after his speech said to me that he knew he had work to do, he knew that he needed to make those one-on-one connections, and the fact that we were respectful when he was speaking lent for that opportunity,? Romero said.

Romney is unlikely to make much headway with his attempts to convince the Hispanic community that the president is taking their votes for granted. Most Obama supporters, like Leija, blame Republicans in Congress for blocking immigration reform. And as for the charge that Obama broke a promise by not appearing at NALEO in every year of his presidency?

?I?ve been a member of NALEO for 12 years and I?ve never seen Gov. Romney here,? Martinez Fischer said. ?The fact of the matter is, [Obama is] the president of the United States and he?s the leader of the world and we don?t expect him to be at every place every time we have a convening. But we know where we stand within his policies.?
