US stocks retreat from 3 1/2-year highs

U.S. stocks pulled back Monday from some of their highest levels in three and a half years.

In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 48 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,935. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell five points to 1,361. The Nasdaq composite index slipped 13 points to 2,951.

On Friday, the S&P closed at its highest level since June 2008. And last week the Dow climbed above 13,000 several times. It has not closed above 13,000 since May 2008.

The price of oil has risen 14 percent in the past month alone, and closed on Friday above $109, its highest point since May. A strengthening economy and higher tensions with Iran have boosted oil prices.

But some are worried that if oil prices rise too fast, and gasoline prices along with them, they will stifle the economic recovery. The price of oil fell more than $1 on Monday to $108.68 in New York trading, providing some relief.

Government figures show that growth in demand for crude oil has slowed in the U.S. from a year earlier, although some oil traders are betting a strengthening economy will eventually boost consumption.

U.S. stocks moving included home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos., up 1 percent after reporting a 13 percent jump in fourth-quarter profits. Chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. rose 6.3 percent after Japanese rival Elpida Memory Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. fell 1.4 percent after the investor said the company's board has picked a successor along with two backups.

All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 were down, led by a 1.2 percent drop in financial stocks.

The drop in U.S. stocks follows similar declines at stock markets overseas. In London, the FTSE 100 index fell 1.1 percent. Germany's DAX gave up 1.7 percent, and the CAC-40 in France fell 1.5 percent.

The European debt crisis is also still a lingering concern. Talks in Mexico at a meeting of the G-20 nations' finance ministers and central bank heads pointed to the need for the European Union to add billions in funds designed to stabilize the situation and calm markets.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index ended down 0.1 percent at 9,633.9, giving up gains posted earlier in the day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent to 21,217.86 and South Korea's Kospi lost 1.4 percent to 1,991.16.

There was positive news in housing. The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes rose in January to the highest level in nearly two years.

The rise in the index tracked by the National Association of Realtors supports the view that the housing market is gradually coming back.

London 2012 Olympics: If you take the routes Games chiefs tell you to, it'll take 3 times as long

By Ian Gallagher and George Arbuthnott

Last updated at 5:19 PM on 26th February 2012

Navigating London?s transport system can be bewildering at the best of times. And the Olympics will make things more confusing still?...?especially if visitors follow advice being offered by the London 2012 organisers.

In an effort to avoid overburdening London Underground?s Jubilee Line ? the main route to the Olympic Park in Stratford ? they recommend making tortuously convoluted journeys taking up to three times longer than normal.

The routes include detours by bus, on foot and even by ferry.

Going to the Games? If you follow the 2012 chiefs' instructions, you may well miss some of the Olympic action

Going to the Games? If you follow the 2012 chiefs' instructions, you may well miss some of the Olympic action

A journey from Gatwick Airport to the Olympic Stadium, for example, which normally takes just over an hour, will take visitors who follow official advice three hours 49 minutes.

It seems organisers are still worried about human gridlock despite the Jubilee Line?s ?80?million upgrade to enable it to cope during the Games.
While Londoners are likely to avoid the recommended routes, organisers clearly hope Olympic visitors will follow the instructions detailed on the London 2012 website.

?

Gatwick airport to Olympic stadium

Rather disingenuously, the site claims visitors are being given the ?easiest possible? routes in a section of the site marked Spectator Journey Planner, which works in the same way as the route finder on the Transport for London website. Spectators are invited to type in a starting point and destination. After a few seconds, the recommended route pops up.

Imagine, for instance, you are starting your journey from Stanmore Underground station in North-West London and want to get to the Olympic Park near Stratford station.

Nightmare: Endless bus journeys to get to the various Olympic sites will not appeal to fans

Nightmare: Endless bus journeys to get to the various Olympic sites will not appeal to fans

As the two stations are at opposite ends of the Jubilee Line, nothing could be simpler. No changes are required and TfL estimates it?s a journey of just over an hour. But not according to the 2012 website.

It inexplicably advises leaving the Jubilee Line at Baker Street Tube? station and walking to another station ten minutes? away to catch a train to? St Pancras International. From there, it?s an 11-minute walk to the domestic? terminal at St Pancras to catch a train to Stratford. Allowing for security checks and a ten-minute walk to the Olympic Park, the total journey time is two hours 18 minutes.

The website also offers puzzling advice when travelling to the Olympic Park from Kingston in Surrey ? a distance of 18 miles that should take no longer than an hour. It would normally involve travelling by train to Waterloo and a Jubilee Line service to Stratford.

Bizarrely, the 2012 route suggests ignoring Kingston station altogether.

Instead it recommends walking to the town centre, taking a 15-minute bus ride to nearby Raynes Park, a train journey to Vauxhall, a Tube journey to King?s Cross, a walk to another station and finally a train to Stratford. In all, the trip takes two hours 41 minutes.

Transport chiefs predict the Olympics could mean hour-long queues at 29 of the capital?s Tube stations, with key Jubilee Line commuter stations ? Waterloo, London Bridge and Canary Wharf ? experiencing crowds that may have to be controlled by the police.

Millions of workers are being urged to work from home or go on holiday during the Olympics, and organisers are also asking people to walk to work from railway stations or cycle from home.

Queues of more than half an hour are expected at 53 key stations in the capital and 2012 organisers have added about? 70 minutes to predicted Olympic journey times due to ?airport-style security at the venue and unforeseen delays on the transport network?.

A London 2012 spokesman said: ?The planner suggests a variety of routes and modes of transport, avoiding some of the busier interchanges on the transport network, and incorporates extra time for ticketholders to clear security checks at venues.?

Dr Waheed ?politically the weakest person in the ... - Minivan News

Dr Waheed ?politically the weakest person in the Maldives?: political advisor, Hassan Saeed thumbnail

An audio recording of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan?s political advisor describing him as ?politically the weakest person in the Maldives? with ?a lot of legitimacy issues? has been leaked on social media.

?In reality, why we are not able to fully attend internationally is because Dr Waheed is least prepared for this job,? says Dr Hassan Saeed in the recording.

Dr Saeed recently traveled to the UK to meet the Commonwealth Secretary General, the BBC, and UK Undersecretary of the FCO, Alistair Burt.

?Dr Waheed and the wife, that Topi [Ahmed Thaufeeg, Secretary General of Waheed?s Gaumee Itthihaad party] and Waheed?s secretary at the President?s Office ? what I am saying is there is no one else but these four people in Dr Waheed?s team,? Dr Saeed says.

The new government was pushing for engagement with Nasheed?s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) because Dr Waheed?s party did not have ?a single seat in parliament. Therefore we have to keep all these people.?

He expresses sympathy with the frustration Dr Waheed must have experienced during his many days under the former government, ?bored in the office?.

?I wouldn?t just sit. Honestly,? Dr Saeed says. ?When an educated man like him whiles the day away being like this, going on the Internet? really it is sad. This is how Waheed was. What happens when this job [the Presidency] comes all of a sudden??

That job arrived, Dr Saeed says, with ?a lot of legitimacy issues?, the involvement of ?a lot of foreign partners? and ?huge bilateral pressures?.

?Fifty million dollars has to be raised before the end of this month or there will be a sovereign default,? he adds.

President Waheed?s Press Secretary, Musood Imad, told Minivan News that the President?s team had spoken to Dr Hassan Saeed, who said he ?had been played? and that the recording had been ?taken out of context?.

The President?s Office would be releasing a statement on the matter, Imad said.

Dr Saeed was Attorney General under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom?s administration. After breaking from the MDP coalition that unseated the 30 year autocrat in 2008, Saeed?s Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) was vocal in its criticism of government policy, particularly a 25 year concession agreement between Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and Indian infrastructure giant GMR involving the construction of a new terminal.

The Vice President of his party, Dr Mohamed Jameel ? now the Home Minister ? was also a vocal critic of the government?s religious credentials, in January distributing a pamphlet entitled ?President Nasheed?s devious plot to destroy the Islamic faith of Maldivians?.

Dr Saeed was also one the first to raise concerns about the conduct of Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed, in a letter to Gayoom in 2005.

Translation:

?Then second in command has now become the chief. When it happened, as circumstances would have it, he is the weakest, politically the weakest person in the Maldives is Dr Waheed. In reality, why we are not able to fully attend internationally is because Dr Waheed is least prepared for this job.

?The wife and?Dr Waheed and the wife, that Topi [Secretary General of Waheed's Gaumee Ittihad party, Ahmed Thaufeeg] and Waheed?s secretary at President? Office ? what I am saying is there is no one else but these four people in Dr Waheed?s team.

?And this is?as circumstances would have it, there was no major role for President Waheed in the previous government. Very many days [spent] bored in the office. I wouldn?t just sit. Honestly. When an educated man like him whiles the day away being like this, going on the Internet?[few people chuckle, a voice is heard saying: 'on Facebook'. More chuckles]..really it is sad. This is how Waheed was. What happens when this job comes all of a sudden?

?And also, when it came?a lot of legitimacy issues are there, a lot of foreign partners are also involved, bilateral pressures are so huge. 50 million dollars have to be raised before the end of this month or there will be a sovereign default. And there isn?t a single seat in parliament. Therefore we have to keep all these people?and that?s why it is being thought ideally to include MDP in the coalition [cut off].?

Navy launches new communications satellite

(AP) ? The Navy has launched a new communications satellite after two weather-related cancellations last week.

An Atlas V rocket carrying the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite launched from Cape Canaveral at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

The $2.1 billion narrowband tactical satellite communications system was built by Lockheed Martin and is designed to improve ground communications with mobile ground forces.

It's the first of five that will replace the current Ultra High Frequency Follow-On (UFO) system. MUOS is designed to move 10 times more information than the existing systems. The communications will use voice, video and data simultaneously using 3G technology.

She cheated cuz I have an addiction...thoughts? - Talk About Marriage

Ok, Ill try to be specific. Been married 2.5 years, dated for several before that. Generally had a good relationship this whole time, very much in love etc...Now, for the past ten years or so I've had a drug habit. I've struggled with weed, off and on, or sometimes more, sometimes less, for the past ten years. Im a smart enough guy, I get good greats, I play high-level soccer etc, but I have struggled to eliminate weed from my life. To that end, about a year ago I started getting into weed again on a more consistent basis. Over a three month period or so it developed into an unhealthy habit/addiction. In the process
over that 3 month period my wife and I started getting a bit distant. I would be out often with friends, smoking etc. and we began spending less time together (honey-moon phase over?) and growing a bit distant. She started feeling distant to me at least. Or I should say, felt I wasnt around as much as i should for her, wasnt pulling my weight in the marriage, both emotionally, and house chores etc...

Now at some point over that same 3 month period she began a new job and started a friendship with her co-worker(where she volunteered at and hopefully would eventually get a job at). He has so much in common with her. They both are extremely passionate about their work and work-related things (teaching, fitness etc). At some point during the initial 3 month phase she admitted to me that she was having an innappropriate relationship with this guy. It started out just that they got along very well,
was easy to talk to (from both ends, he to her, her to he) etc, but that it quickly developed into her sharing how she felt and opening up to him etc., things she normally would be sharing with her husband. They started getting closer in other words. That had started that but she admitted this to me then, knew it was wrong, said she didnt want to continue it anymore, said it was over etc., that they would only be strictly professional. I accepted it, gave her the benefit of the doubt, and felt that I could believe her when she said it was over. The only reason it happened she said then was because we were less close lately, which in turn was essentially my fault, due to smoking too much weed. So I guess I have my share of the blame.

Fast forward 9 months from then to today. I've still been struggling with my weed addiction. It goes up or down, but its been there. And our relationship hasn't been great over this past year. When she first told me about that guy, at the time we first started growing distant, I had tried to rein in the collateral damage of my habit. That is, I learned that weed can make me complacent, lazy etc, and so even if I havent conquered my addiction, I tried to conciously be a better husband nonetheless. I would make myself emotionally available as much as possible, listen to her, be there for her etc, or would try to pull my weight more around the house. Yes, it wasn't perfect, there was still shortcomings for sure, but I can honestly say it was better than the first 3 month period.

Now the past 2 months have been quite rocky. In terms of my weed, she had laid down the hammer, giving me an ultimatum about a month ago that if I didnt check into rehad kind of thing that she was going to seperate. She didn't want to enable me anymore etc, which I felt was fair. I felt like utter **** for this. I felt/feel extremely bad about how I'd become. Over the past 6 months she had begun to be more open with how she was being affected by my addicition, that she felt very hurt, distant, that I havent been a good husband etc. My response would be shame, guilt, a thousand sorrys and I love yous. I would try to rein it in, or be a better man for her, sometimes to great effect, sometimes to mediocre effect. Lord knows I am not perfect. But anyways, the past six months have been like that, with the past two being "hammer being laid down." She stopped sleeping with me altogether, and generally was emotionally dead to me, unresponsive to me, even if I tried everything to love her. If I would try to be nice, or loving etc, these past two months she's been cold, essentially. Meanwhile I started a NA program, during which it requires full honesty and accountability to your loved ones re: the damage you've caused. I started going through the steps these past 2 months, of admitting my mistakes, admitting I have a problem, aplogizing repeatedly for the hurt I caused, all the while receiving minimal response from my wife "cuz she has been so hurt" or "we are so distant" etc. To my mind I could accept this, and felt it was only part of the healing process. I had hurt her, she had the right to express her pain and remain distant until she could trust me again.

This week, by accident, I found out that her and co-worker made out, for quite awhile apparently, not just a kiss, one night two months ago when they were along together at his place. She admitted it to me, reluctently, but full of guilt. We were both crying alot etc...As I asked more questions and she became more forthright with me, it turns out that they had retained their friendship/relationship all along, or recontinued it after a short respite following the first time she admitted it to me. They would hang out at his place, go out to pubs together, go for coffee or walks together etc. Physically, they made out the one time, and also on various occassions have held hands, hug and cuddled, held each other close etc. Emotionally, she said their relationship is "complicated" since they "care about eachother alot" and developed "feelings for eachothers". They have shared this with eachother, know that they have feelings for eachother etc. She said this only really picked up in the last three months, but I know for a fact that she has remained friends with him from the get-go.

I feel hurt, very hurt. We were always extremely faithful to eachother and always spoke about how that's the last thing we'd ever do. I was serious about that. Not to come across as arrogant, but I'm a smart dude, good looks, and barring a weed addiction I'm trying to conquer, have my **** together. I'll be going to a top law school next year and dont find it difficult to talk to girls. And girls enjoy my company. Point is, there was lots of opportunity to cheat but I never would. I dont so much as even speak to girls, besides my sisters or old friends. If there is a situation where I feel a girl may be into me or me into her, I leave. I have my faults but I would never cheat, never wanted to, never wanted to be that guy. I swore to myself I would never, no matter what, cheat. That was the cardinal rule. And she's shared the same, and we've both agree how vital that is and how we'd leave eachother, how our awesome relationship would be broken, if that ever happened.

A few days have passed and we've talked. From her perspective she feels like crap about what happened. She says she cant believe she did that, that it was wrong etc etc...She also says the only reason it happened was because of the weed, that it was because we were distant for the past year. I can accept that to a degree. I am no angel and I know the weed has been a problem and that I've hurt her and that I need to change. I know that and accept that. But does that make her relationship ok? Obviously not, but does it justify it? Or excuse it? Or put another way, are we both equally wrong here? Or is it different, what we did? The way she puts it, she says its like I've been cheating on her with weed for the past year, that I choose weed over being there for her, and because of that, she started seeking fulfillment elsewhere. I can accept that, but then I also think about and wonder, that during the past year there has been lots of times that I've tried to be there for her, supported her, made nice evenings out with her, cuddled her, listened etc, only to recieve the cold shoulder. Or I think of the past two months since she has laid down the hammer, threatening to leave and withholding all physical and emotional intimacy until I get better. I've felt like crap and blamed myself for all that was wrong in our relationship, but I cant help but think alot of that was also because she had been carrying on this relationship with that guy. I mean, how did we even have a change at repairing our relationship when she had been carrying this one behind my back the whole time? And to what extent is it not her fault that this past year we had been distant? How could we not when she was getting fullfilment elsewhere?

I dont know what to do. She wants to get MCing and work this through. I do too but I cant help feel something is broken. I know she didnt sleep with him, but they did enough physically, and even more than enough emotionally, and for awhile. She's also been lying about it this whole time, and especially these past two months since the time they made out, she'd dramatically increased the distance and blame. I cant help feel angry about it. Here we are trying to fix our relationship via me fixing my addiction, a process which requires full honesty and responsibility by all parties involved, and she's carrying on this relationship? All the while increasing the blame for the fact that we are distant? All the while rejecting my attempts at intimacy, love, support, apology etc on the pretext that we are too broken and its my fault?

She wants to get MCing, move one, let by-gones be by-gones etc, and restart our marriage. We both ****ed up sort of deal, we deal with it and start afresh. I should add her tone changed the second I found out about it. The day I found out she was all "sorry, sorry, we both messed up, lets get MC and move past this etc," whereas the very day before, even a couple hours before I found out, she was talking about contemplating leaving me, talking about how she spoke with friends who had marriage problems, one stuck it out and is now happy, the other left and never has been happy, and that she doesnt know what she should do. This kind of talk had been going on for the past couple months before I found out. So she had been laying it all on me, had been threatening leaving, and the moment I find out everything changes? Now she just wants to work it out and move on? She says it was all a mistake and only happened because we developed problems. On a side note, she continues and continued to see that guy after they made out, but on a strictly professional level she says. Furthermore, she is about to start a job working under his authority. So she will see him everyday. This burns me inside so much. I feel like a jackass. This guy makes out and has an emotional relatioship with my wife, and now she is about to accept a job working with him?? She says she would be willing to change jobs etc but shes been trying to get this job literally for a year and only got it because of those connections. And I know how meaningful this work is to her. She'd spent the last 7 years in school, volunteering etc to get it. But now she'll be doing this work along-side this guy. I can't stand the thought of it, but I also can't stand the thought of asking her to not do the work she absolutely loves.

I dont know what to do. I know she didnt sleep with him, but this past year he's basically been her emotional partner, and I've been the guy who is to blame for becoming distant. I know I have my faults, and I know the weed thing is a problem which Im sincerely trying to fix, but I would never ever cheat on her. She says its essentailly like Ive been cheating on her with weed, but really? Is that the same? Yes I've been a ****ty husband at times, but I never ever tried to hurt her, even though I did, and I never went out to be with another woman, even during the times where we were emotionally and physically distant.

What do you guys think? We both equally at fault? Is it essentially the same what we did? Should I/Can I ever trust her again? Any thoughts or experiences or whatever would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty lost here...

NY boy sleeps through theft of dad's running car

(AP) ? Police in upstate New York say a 6-year-old boy snoozing in his father's car never woke up while the vehicle was being stolen after it was left running outside a store.

Officers tell Rochester media outlets that a 26-year-old man from Irondequoit (uh-RAHN'-duh-kwoyt) left his car running while he went inside a convenience store to get a drink late Saturday night.

While inside the store, someone jumped into the car and drove off with the boy asleep in the car.

Police say the car was found abandoned within 30 minutes. Officials say the boy wasn't harmed and had slept through the entire ordeal.

Police charged the boy's father with endangering the welfare of a child.

The car thief hasn't been found.

Science on Ice: What It's Like to Live and Work in Antarctica

The Gerlache Strait looks exactly as I imagined Antarctica would: Snow spills to the edge of the passage from the jagged landscape lining either side. The tops of icebergs rise from the flat, dark water like stiff peaks of beaten egg whites; the ice just beneath the surface glows turquoise. The air hangs soft and gray, and by the time the ARSV Laurence M. Gould rounds the southern tip of Anvers Island and enters Arthur Harbour, a light snow is falling.

Through the thick flakes, a handful of Monopoly-size buildings materialize. Figures in bright orange suits amble to the edge of the dock as the ship pulls in. Some grab the research vessel's towlines; others spot the first snowball flying at the exact moment I do. It comes from the stern, where marine biologist Kim Bernard has dipped into a cardboard-box arsenal. The other side quickly retaliates, and soon the residents of Palmer Station?both current and incoming?are locked in battle.

Palmer is the smallest of the three year-round U.S. research stations in Antarctica and the only one on the West Antarctic Peninsula. It's also the only station without an airstrip. Reaching Palmer requires a four-day voyage from Punta Arenas, Chile, on the Gould. The vessel plunges south through the Drake Passage as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the largest current in the world, sweeps through the same narrow channel barreling east.

Just before I left the United States for Chile, Hugh Ducklow, the director of a long-term ecological research project at Palmer, told me that the station's location, chosen in 1965 for its convenience, turned out to be a stroke of great scientific luck. "For decades, nobody had any idea about climate change," he said. "Now we find ourselves at the very spot where it's happening most rapidly."

Over the past 50 years, the average air temperature increased 6 degrees Fahrenheit along the West Antarctic Peninsula, unlike that farther north or south. Scientists have also documented stronger surface winds, cloudier skies, more snowfall, less ice, and warmer ocean water?all adding up to profound changes in the polar ecosystem. Because that ecosystem is relatively uncomplicated, scientists can detect and establish the significance of these changes more easily than, say, in a coral reef or even in a forest in the U.S. By studying climate change at Palmer, Ducklow says, "we can figure out rules of ecosystem response elsewhere."

Thanks to a fellowship from Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, I've come to document something too: station life. I begin my research in the galley with a penguin-shaped sugar cookie, then go on a tour. It doesn't take long. Pretty much everything is located in two buildings sandwiched between a glacier and the Southern Ocean. A lone street sign points toward Denver (7555 miles) and the South Pole (1744 miles). Three weeks here, I think, could go by very slowly. Instead, they fly far too fast.

"Man overboard!" Katharine Coles is pointing at me from a rubber zodiac as I bob in the 32-degree Fahrenheit polar waters. I'm wearing an extra-large neoprene survival suit, which, because I'm only five foot six, bunches in giant folds around my limbs. I feel surprisingly, pleasingly, warm. Lily Glass, Palmer's boating coordinator, tells Coles to drive away from me; I awkwardly swim to a chunk of ice and cling to it for dramatic effect. Then Glass talks Coles through a Williamson turn, a rescue maneuver that brings the zodiac back to the point where I "fell" out.

Glass grew up on the water, pulling lobster pots in New England, and learned her way around an engine after buying a 1971 Volkswagen bus. But mostly it's her unruffled calm, honed while teaching high school science in Massachusetts and Mongolia, that she brings to Boating II?a mandatory class for anyone who wants to pilot a zodiac onto the Southern Ocean. At Palmer, that's pretty much everyone.

"Some of my favorite days are the crappiest out on the water because you have to be that much more focused," Glass says. "And it's those days that really make you appreciate weekends, when you can turn off the engine and not go anywhere." On a Sunday with exceptionally clear blue skies, people pile into zodiacs to chase reports of breeching humpback whales. Coles?who is Utah's poet laureate and, like me, applied for a grant to visit Palmer?doesn't have to go searching for wildlife. Twice a penguin jumps in a zodiac with her.

During the Austral Summer, which stretches from roughly November to February, there is no real darkness in Antarctica, just twilight. The sun is still shining brightly at 9:30 on my first Friday night. Behind the BioLab, graduate students are setting up an ocean-acidification experiment in a marine tank; in the tank next to that, six people are soaking in the station hot tub. The sound of Cake floats over from the Terra Lab, where an array of instruments constantly monitors seismic activity, atmospheric radionuclides, and electromagnetic waves generated by lightning strikes around the globe. Brian Nelson, the lab's technician, is leading another suite of instruments in a "Terra Jam": Palmer's band is practicing for open-mike night.

Alice Alpert sits on the edge of Bruiser, the wooden work platform mounted across the zodiac, and dangles her brown XtraTuf boots over the water. Alpert's flotation jacket easily doubles her small size. Despite clumsy insulated rubber gloves, she adroitly cocks the latex band on a gray plastic Niskin bottle so that both ends remain open, and lowers it with a winch 10 meters into the Southern Ocean. Then she fires a weight down the line to snap the ends shut, capturing water.

Researchers have been methodically sampling the ocean here for the past 20 years, and the data reveals changes at the very bottom of the marine food web. As stronger winds churn the water column, for example, phytoplankton are pushed deeper, away from sunlight, so they bloom far less often. These winds also upwell deep, carbon-dioxide-rich water, limiting the amount of CO2 the ocean can absorb from the atmosphere?a process Alpert's team is trying to understand.

I'm tasked with operating the winch to bring the Niskin bottle to the surface. Only, distracted by the line coiling at my feet, I look away at exactly the wrong moment and the bottle hits the top of the winch with a thud. I click the button to try to lower it. No power. The team takes it in stride, heading back to exchange Bruiser for Wonderbread, which has a hand-cranked winch. Later, someone gives me the blown fuse as a souvenir, saying: "Welcome to science."

The Southern Ocean can be glassy and smooth or whipped by 50-knot winds and roiling with giant swells. Because these conditions change within minutes, safety at Palmer is taken very seriously. Whenever a group of boaters signs out a zodiac, they give themselves a name, which may or may not reflect the purpose of their trip. Like Moe at his tavern on The Simpsons, a communications officer dutifully repeats this name over the two-way radio every time crews check in?which is often. During my stay at Palmer, names included Going Viral, Bromance, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Apollo 25, and Hold My Beer and Watch This.

Sleek and yellow, the Slocum Glider autonomous underwater vehicle resembles a torpedo. When I peer inside, it looks much less ominous. Rows of D batteries line the aft end, and I can see all the way through to a buoyancy pump. The glider is propped up on a counter in the lab while Travis Miles, a graduate student at Rutgers University, dismantles it. He's trying to figure out why the leak-detect sensor went off when the team deployed the vehicle. "Being down here has been a whole new world of beta testing," he says.

Once the problem is fixed, the team plans to send the glider across a deep-sea canyon near Palmer. Such canyons allow warm, salty water at the bottom of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current to flow up onto the continental shelf. Historically, that's been a boon to marine life, delivering heat and nutrients that stimulate food supplies. Only now they appear to be delivering way too much.

The real engine of the Antarctic ecosystem is the Southern Ocean: Water holds a thousand times more heat per unit volume than air does. Over the past 50 years, water along the peninsula has warmed significantly. Ice transfers this heat to the atmosphere: The midwinter air temperature has risen 11 degrees Fahrenheit, five times the average global increase. The winter ice season has lost 83 days, effectively disappearing.

The gliders, scientists hope, will track how greater volumes of this warm, deep water are being swept onto the shelf. Unlike humans, who are limited by weather and their own endurance, gliders can slalom through the Southern Ocean day and night for hundreds of miles. They move by changing buoyancy: pulling a coffee cup's worth of water into the nose, then pushing it back out again.

Miles shows me the air bladder in the glider's tail, a balloon about the size of an airplane pillow. When it inflates, the tail lifts out of the water so an iridium phone can call Rutgers for the glider's next set of instructions. "If we see something interesting," he says, "we can adapt how we fly the glider and hypothesize as we go."

"Birders, this is Dragnet." Silence ensues. Alex Culley, a researcher from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, tries again. He's in a zodiac, sampling for marine viruses. There are a billion in every liter of seawater, and he's trying to tease out their role in the polar ecosystem. Another long pause, then Glass radios from the station: "Dragnet, this is Lily. They have to hike up a hill in order to get reception."

"Thanks, Lily. Actually, maybe you can answer this. We've got a chinstrap [penguin] that's jumped onto our boat. Please advise."b>

Since there is a degree of influence with what you can encourage people to think with your domain, then you might as well find a good one. We all tend to generally know that the less lengthier domains are the most prized. Truly awesome one or two word names seem to be the most coveted, and most people would love to have them. Although it?s not easy to find short domain names these days, you have two options ? either brainstorm a short domain name and see if it?s available or go buy an existing domain name that?s for sale. Long, low hanging fruit type names may or may not work for you, it depends on the monthly search volume. Planning out all the specifics for marketing will help you to narrow down your own criteria for a name. Not only that, even if you feel like selling it later on, you?ll get a better price for a short one. While it may sound appealing and even impressive to see companies buying expensive domain names; you don?t have to do it. Just take a look at the pros and cons of buying an existing name versus one that is totally new. The reason for this is, the funds that you allocate for your domain purchase can be used for a better purpose, and invested more wisely. Your efforts to discover more on this subject will eventually prove to be liberating for you. It?s fairly easy to lose domain names these days when they expire without your notice. You can register your domains for up to ten years, but at least maybe several years is a good idea. Just imagine your huge content site suddenly with no domain name at all. But do not ignore the expiration warnings from your domain registrar ? Namecheap, perhaps? Finding the perfect domain is easy, but it can take a lot of time and research.
