Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera official: Interchangeable lenses, Android Jelly Bean and 4G LTE

Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera official

True to JK Shin's promise, Samsung is indeed introducing a new Android-powered mirrorless camera: the Galaxy NX. Although it runs Google's mobile OS (version 4.2.2 Jelly Bean) and bears LTE radios, the NX is not quite a direct sequel to the Galaxy Camera, the company's glorified point-and-shoot for all comers. Rather, the Galaxy NX is what Samsung calls an interchangeable-lens CSC (or Compact System Camera), featuring a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, as well as 3G / 4G LTE, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity -- making it worthy of that Galaxy moniker.

As you can tell from the above image, the Galaxy NX also packs a large 4.8-inch HD LCD display on its rear and is powered by a 1.6GHz Pega-Q quad-core setup and separate DRIMe IV Signal processor for imaging. The UI should look pretty familiar to anyone who's used an Android device before, with the common apps and widgets submenus, as well as the device wheel for its 30 Smart Modes -- employed when selecting imaging settings. And if you happen to own any of the company's other NX cameras, you'll be able to swap out lenses (13 in all) as the Galaxy NX is fully compatible with that range. It also incorporates a hybrid AF, culled from the best of DSLRs and compacts, with a shutter speed of 1/6,000th of a second and 8.6fps shooting.

Samsung's been pretty forthcoming about all the tech and software it's put into the Galaxy NX, but there are two key bits it's still withholding: pricing and availability. For now, it appears UK residents will have first crack at the Galaxy NX, as PR pegs its release for that territory as sometime this summer. The same, however, can't be said for a US launch. Regardless, as the Galaxy NX is more a proper camera for experienced photogs and less Android phone like the Galaxy Camera and S4 Zoom, you can bet on its price tag being relatively high. In the meanwhile, check out our Galaxy NX hands-on for more detailed impressions.

The Engadget Mobile Podcast, live at 4PM ET!

As if there could be any doubt, the introduction of iOS 7 at this week's WWDC will likely take up a significant portion of our podcast today. There may be some talk of a Galaxy S4 zoom -- as if you could even try to keep Myriam from talking about it -- and a few other miscellaneous pieces of mobile news as well, so this is definitely a podcast worth tuning into. Join us at 4PM ET!

?Storm Chasers? star Tim Samaras, son die chasing Oklahoma tornado

Tim Samaras (Discovery Channel)

"Storm Chasers" star Tim Samaras, 55, his 24-year-old son, Paul, and a 45-year-old colleague were among those killed when powerful storms, including several tornadoes, tore through Oklahoma on Friday.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tim Samaras, his son Paul and their colleague Carl Young," the Discovery Channel said in a statement released Sunday. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families."

The men died while chasing an F-3 tornado in El Reno, Okla., near Oklahoma City. At least nine people, including a mother and her baby were killed during Friday's storms, officials said.

"Thank you to everyone for the condolences," Tim Samaras' brother, Jim Samaras, wrote on Tim's Facebook wall. It truly is sad that we lost my great brother Tim and his great son, Paul. Our hearts also go out to the Carl Young family as well as they are feeling the same feelings we are today. They all unfortunately passed away but doing what they loved. ... I look at it that he is in the 'big tornado in the sky.'"

The "Storm Chasers" series ended in November after five seasons on the Discovery Channel. The network said it will dedicate Sunday's "Mile Wide Tornado: Oklahoma Disaster"?a primetime special on the deadly May 20 tornado that ripped through Moore, Okla.?to their memory.

?This has really shaken up everyone in the storm chasing community," Doug Kiesling, a storm photographer, told CNN. "We knew this day would happen someday, but nobody would imagine that it would happen to Tim. Tim was one of the safest people to go out there."

Samaras' last tweet, published Friday, read: "Dangerous day ahead for OK--stay weather savvy!"

"Tim was not a cowboy," Mike Nelson, chief meteorologist for Denver's ABC affiliate, said. "He was as cautious as possible about his approach to studying these dangerous storms."

It's unclear exactly how the men were killed, but a fellow storm chaser told ABC that their equipment is missing. "The family and overall scientific community would like it recovered to see what happened and what went wrong," the storm chaser said. "If you come across camera equipment in the tornado debris, please let authorities know."

Friday's storm "ended up putting many storm chasing lives in danger, and caused a few chasers to question the practice amid so many disasters and close calls," Connor Simpson wrote on the Atlantic Wire. The Weather Channel's tornado-chasing mobile, "Tornado Hunt 2013," was picked up and tossed 200 yards during one. Miraculously, all three passengers survived:

Last month, Samaras gave an interview to National Geographic about his 30-year storm chasing career.

"I've always had a fascination with weather," Samaras said. "I watched 'The Wizard of Oz' when I was a kid and vowed to myself, 'I'm going to see that tornado one day.' Tornadoes have pretty much become a focus of my life."

He continued: "Being close to a tornado is one of those incredible, fleeting moments that sometimes you have to take a couple of seconds to take in."

Samaras also recalled a close call he had with a tornado South Dakota in 2003 when an F-4 "dropped from the sky on a sleepy road" and he deployed three probes in the tornado's path, placing the last one from his car 100 yards ahead of the tornado itself.

"That's the closest I've been to a violent tornado," he said, "and I have no desire to ever be that close again."
