India's Kartik sparks row with backing-up run out

Former India spinner Murali Kartik caused controversy in the English County Championship on Thursday when he ran out a batsman who had backed up too far down the pitch.

Kartik, playing for Surrey against Somerset -- the county he left at the end of last season -- ran out 20-year-old Alex Barrow when the non-striker was out of his ground.

Surrey captain Gareth Batty was offered the chance to call the batsman back by umpire Peter Hartley but refused, leaving the official with no choice but to uphold the appeal and send the batsman on his way on the third day of this four-day First Division clash at Taunton, Somerset's headquarters.

Although a legitimate form of dismissal, running out a batsman backing up is widely considered to be against the spirit of cricket and is rarely seen in first-class matches.

Kartik, though, warned Barrow earlier in the over that he was backing up too far -- something he no longer needed to do, following a rewrite of the relevant section of cricket's rules last year.

Both the bowler and Batty were jeered by spectators and angry fans of both clubs made their feelings known to the Surrey duo during the tea interval.

Kartik, however, told his Twitter followers after stumps: "Everyone get a life please... if a batsman is out on a stroll, in spite of being warned, does that count as being in the spirit of the game?"

Somerset made 294 in reply to Surrey's 317 and by stumps the visitors were 58 without loss in their second innings, heading into what is sure to be a fiery final day.

"People obviously think the spirit of the game has been brought into disrepute -- that was not my intention and I thoroughly apologise for that," Batty said.

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick, the former England opening batsman, said he had been saddened by the manner of Barrow's dismissal.

"I'm very disappointed. It's not something you want to see in cricket," he said.

"I have never witnessed anything like it before at any level. Theoretically, Alex was out, as we all know, but it was against the spirit of the game."

In February this year, India captain Virender Sehwag withdrew an appeal after the spinner Ravi Ashwin ran out Sri Lanka's Lahiru Thirimanne during a one-day international.

Such dismissals have been regarded as unsporting ever since India's Vinoo Mankad ran out Australia's Bill Brown at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1947 after Brown backed up too far at the bowler's end.

But even in Australia, attitudes towards 'Mankadding' are now changing, with former international Simon O'Donnell saying after the Thirimanne incident: "Where does this spirit of cricket issue come from when what we are talking about is a batsman breaking the rules?

"If a bowler puts his foot just over the line he is called for a no-ball, so how is this any different?"

Samsung announces Galaxy Note 2!

Android Central

We're live at Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 in Berlin, where Samsung has just announced the latest device in its Galaxy Note line, the Galaxy Note 2! The Note 2 is the widely-anticipated successor to last year's original Galaxy Note, and Samsung's improved upon that device with souped-up internals, re-vamped software and a brand new design.

The Galaxy Note 2 sports a 9.4mm thin chassis with a 5.5-inch 16:9 display at 1280x720 resolution. The screen itself is an HD SuperAMOLED panel, similar to what Samsung's included on the Galaxy S3. Visually the Galaxy Note is similar to the Galaxy S 3. The home button, the rear of the phone, the overall shape all strike a resemblance to the smaller sibling. Like its predecessor, the Note 2 sports a Wacom-based pressure-sensitive "S Pen," which has been redesigned. The pen is now taller and thicker, the button on the side now has texture to it, and it has a rubber tip which creates a subtly different action on the screen.

On the inside, the Galaxy Note 2 is powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 Quad CPU -- the same CPU found inside the S3, only at a higher frequency. That's backed up by 2GB of RAM and 16,32, and 64GB of storage. Samsung will offer the device in both 3G/HSPA and 4G LTE flavors, though for the moment there's no info on which version will be offered in which markets. On the software side, there's Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, backed up by Samsung's TouchWiz Nature UX. And like the original Note, pen-centric apps like S Note have been included to take advantage of the new Note's unique hardware.

Availability has yet to be announced, but we'll update you just as soon as any announcement is made. In the meantime, keep it locked to AC for continuing live coverage of the event, and hands-on reports with more info on the device itself.

Sparkling Strawberry Mint Limeade

Post image for Sparkling Strawberry Mint Limeade

Summer days are some of my favorites. It always fun to play with the girls on a big blanket in the grass or watch Maddy pushing Molly in her swing as they both squeal gleefully. Maddy runs around kicking her soccer ball as Molly looks on, just itching to get in the game. At this rate, Molly will be running around with Maddy in no time!

At the end of the day they?re exhausted! My girls are small so they?re in bed early.?I always enjoy sitting out on the back deck taking in that?dusky sunlight of a summer day?s end.?Their early bedtime also leaves plenty of time for me to mix up a little summer cocktail to enjoy out there in the balmy warmth of August.

This cocktail is the perfect drink for warm summer days with friends or some ?me time? in the evening. Fresh strawberries, lime and mint combine with a little bubbly champagne and makes any time you have one feel like a little something special. This can always be made virgin as well by simply trading champagne for club soda. Enjoy these last lingering days of summer with drink in hand.

Enjoy!

Sony NEX 5R specs reportedly leaked ahead of tomorrow's launch

Sony Alpha Rumors is claiming to have a big pile of specs for what's presumed to be the NEX-5R, so with a fistful of sodium chloride at the ready, here goes. The site believes the new mirrorless ILC will pack a 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, low-light sensitivity up to 25,600 and the same tiltable three-inch screen we saw in the NEX-F3. It's also saying that we can expect to see 99-point phase-detection and 25 contrast autofocus points, with 1920 x 1080 HD video recording at 60p and a battery that'll take 400 pictures on a single charge. If those facts have gotten your purchasing-fingers twitchy, we'll be at Sony's press conference tomorrow to find out all the gory details.

Official: 24 South Sudan troops killed by rebels

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? At least 24 South Sudanese soldiers have been killed in clashes with a militia group that the southern government accuses of subverting a disarmament campaign, a southern military official said on Monday.

South Sudan army spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said that an additional 12 soldiers were wounded and 17 are still missing from the Aug. 22 ambush of 200 South Sudanese troops who had been sent to quell alleged rebel activity in Jonglei State, the scene of a disarmament program that Human Rights Watch criticizes as too violent.

The killing of South Sudanese troops has been condemned by the U.N. mission in South Sudan, which said in a statement that the attack was "deliberately intended to undermine progress made in improving the security environment and in forging inter-communal reconciliation in Jonglei State."

Aguer said the rebels are led by an elusive militant named Yau Yau and that they are backed by South Sudan's northern neighbor Sudan in a clandestine effort to keep Jonglei State lawless and ungovernable. Aguer said the rebels are allied with the cattle-keeping Murle tribe, whose men are resisting the government's disarmament efforts. The soldiers were ambushed at a place called Fhodo in Pibor County, he said, describing the rebels simply as a "Khartoum-supported militia." Sudan has consistently denied such allegations.

Relations between the two Sudans have been especially tense since April, when the southern military forcibly took a disputed oil well in an armed conflict that threatened to escalate into full-blown war between the neighbors.

South Sudan became an independent state last year, but it has outstanding border and oil-related issues with Sudan. The neighbors are currently engaged in on-and-off negotiations mediated by the African Union.

Prehistoric tiny bugs found trapped in amber

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Scientists have found three well preserved ancient insects frozen in amber ? and time ? in what is Earth's oldest bug trap.

The discoveries of amber-encased insects in Italy may sound like something out of "Jurassic Park" but these bugs are even older than that. They are about 230 million years old, which puts them in the Triassic time period, and about 100 million years older than what had been the previously known oldest critters trapped in fossilized tree resin, or amber.

Gooey tree resin is like sap but without water and can't be diluted.

Researchers painstakingly examined 70,000 droplets of amber found in northeastern Italy. Stuck in them were two microscopic mites and much of one fly. The mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye and the fly is a tad tinier than a fruit fly, researchers say.

The discovery was reported Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While older insects have been found in rock fossils, these are different because they are not compressed and better preserved, said study lead author David Grimaldi, curator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. And you can see more detail, he said.

"''That's the great thing about amber. You can make this incredible detailed comparison with living species." Grimaldi said.

And when Grimaldi compared the ancient mites to their modern day descendants, he was surprised about how similar they are. Except for difference in the mouth and fewer legs, "they're dead ringers for (modern) gall mites," he said. The modern ones can be found in bubbles or galls on plant leaves.

And that's surprising because the world itself has changed a lot from when these bugs were alive. Back then, there was only one giant continent, some early primitive dinosaurs and no flower plants. Mites now live on flowering plants, but their ancient relatives must have stayed on trees, Grimaldi said.

Derek Briggs, director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History and who wasn't part of the research, called the bugs' discovery tantalizing, adding that it could help researchers further understand how life evolved on land.

Tomato, Brie and Herb Pasta ? The Runaway Spoon

I?ve been making this dish for years, decades if I?m honest.?I really thought it was my own unique creation, and?I patted myself on the back for its genius every time I made it.? It?s been my date night dinner, my decadent solo treat and my impressive meal for friends.? I made it in my first apartment kitchen and shared it with my first house roommate.? It dates, for me, to a time when anything with brie seemed sophisticated and gourmet, before I had stretched my culinary wings too far.? But I just realized, when developing it and photographing it for The Spoon, that it?s not my recipe.? It?s from the classic Silver Palate Cookbook, which I have had for years.? My favorite recipes in the book are marked and stained ? but oddly not this one. Oh, I?ve changed it up a little to suit my tastes, but it is definitely from the cookbook.? Recipes do that, they travel and share and move and become part of a family or a personal legend. I love looking through community cookbooks from different eras and different regions and finding the same basic recipe, maybe with a different name or spelling.? That?s one of the many magical aspects of cooking and feeding friends and family, the community built around good food.? And by the way, I also recently realized that I?ve been taking credit for Nigella Lawson?s lemon linguine for some time now too.

This really is the joy of summer in a delicious, creamy pasta dish.? And it?s quick to put together ? just a bit of chopping.? Sweet cherry tomatoes really shine in this dish, with the nice firm bite preserved.? The simple sauce smells wonderfully summery and the brie melts and coats the pasta, making a rich and decadent cream sauce without the work and kitchen heat.

Tomato, Brie and Herb Pasta

Adapted from The Silver Palate Cookbook

1 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed

? cup fresh oregano leaves, loosely packed

2 cloves garlic

1 pound cherry tomatoes

1 pound Brie

? cup olive oil

Salt and pepper

1 pound linguine or spaghetti

Finely chop the basil and oregano and place in a large bowl that will hold all the cooked pasta.? Put the garlic through a press, or finely chop it, sprinkling a little salt over it during the process.? This helps mellow the garlic, you don?t want big chunks.

Cut the tomatoes in quarters, or chop them smaller if you?d like, and add to the bowl.? Scrape the rind off the cheese ? you don?t have to be too precise about this, just do your best.? A serrated knife and cold cheese helps.? Cut the brie into small pieces, or pull it apart with your fingers, and add to the bowl.? Pour in the olive oil, add few good pinches of salt and grind in some fresh pepper.? Stir everything together, cover the bowl and leave at room temperature for a least an hour, but several hours is fine.? The tomatoes will release their juices and the cheese will become meltingly soft.

When you are ready to eat, bring a large pot of well salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente.? Drain quickly, then pour the hot pasta over the sauce in the bowl.? Leave to sit for a few minutes to melt the cheese and heat the tomatoes through.? Toss the pasta and the sauce together until the pasta and tomatoes are well coated.? Salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately.

Many social gamers are spenders, most regret their spending

Do you regret using money in social games? graph of japanese statisticsAccording to a recent survey from Just Systems and reported on by japan.internet.com into social gaming, almost half the players had spent money on it, and 60% of them regretted their purchases!

Demographics

Between the 10th and 13th of August 2012 1,000 members of the Just Systems-affiliated FastAsk monitor group who played social games completed a private internet-based questionnaire. No further demographics were given.

My wife spends what is, I suppose, technically real money on social games. She is a member of a number of online survey sites, and rather than cashing out, she transfers saved points to social games, in particular Oshare Dorobo, (perhaps ?The Elegant Thief?) a Dress-Up Barbie-type game where in order to complete some quests you need (or so she claims) to buy particular hairdos which are only available from a random vending machine that costs 300 yen per spin. It?s probably about 1,500 yen?s worth of points per month she gets through, and I wish she?d never told me about the month she won 5,000 yen?s worth of tokens?

Research results

Q1: Have you ever spent money on in-game items, etc for social games? (Sample size=1,000)

Regret, reflected on 26.4%
Perhaps regret, reflected on 34.2%
Perhaps don?t regret, reflect on 20.8%

Up to 20,000 yen 1.2%
Up to 30,000 yen 0.8%
More than 30,000 yen 2.3%

Q1SQ3: What is the most money you?ve used in a month in social games? (Sample size=485)

Up to 1,000 yen 33.8%
Up to 2,500 yen 19.0%
Up to 5,000 yen 20.6%
Up to 7,500 yen 4.5%

    Soldiers, Marines punished for misconduct

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Six Army soldiers and three Marines escaped criminal charges, but received administrative punishments for their involvement in two incidents of misconduct in Afghanistan that roiled relations with Afghans, U.S. military officials said Monday.

The soldiers were disciplined for the mistaken burning of Qurans earlier this year at a U.S. base in Afghanistan, and the Marines were punished for their participation in a video that showed them urinating on the corpses of Taliban insurgents.

Discipline against a Navy sailor in the Quran burnings was dismissed, and the Marine Corps said that it will announce discipline against additional Marines in the urination case at a later date.

U.S. military leaders widely condemned the incidents, which were both revealed earlier this year. The Quran burning triggered riots in the street and retribution killings, including two U.S. troops who were shot by an Afghan soldier and two U.S. military advisers who were gunned down at their desks at the Interior Ministry.

The exact punishments were not disclosed Monday, and it was not clear whether the lack of criminal charges would trigger any protests in Afghanistan. Administrative punishments could include demotions, extra duty, forfeiture of pay, or a letter in their file. They could also stall any future advancement and end their military careers.

Aimal Faizi, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, said Karzai's office would review the decisions and wait until Tuesday to respond. The news on the punishments came late at night in Afghanistan.

The Navy said the sailor was found not guilty of any alleged misconduct and that no further disciplinary or administrative action was warranted.

The Qurans and other Islamic books were taken from the Parwan Detention Facility, and officials believed that extremists being detained there were using the texts to exchange messages. The religious books and other materials were put in burn bags and then later thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a major U.S. base north of Kabul.

A report on the investigation into the February Quran burning is expected to be released Monday. But officials have previously detailed the incident, describing it as not intentional, but as a mistake compounded by some bad decisions.

U.S. officials have said that the holy books were pulled out by Afghan workers before they were destroyed. President Barack Obama apologized to Karzai for the incident.

Afghan officials, however, have claimed the burning was intentional, and it reinforced perceptions in the country that Americans are insensitive to the Afghans' religion and culture.

The urination video, which came to light in January and appeared on YouTube, showed four Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead men. On Monday, the Marine Corps revealed that there were also photographs taken at the time.

Discovery of the video led to a criminal investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as well as a Marine investigation of the unit involved ? the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines ? which fought in the southern Afghan province of Helmand for seven months before returning to its home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., last September.

In the video, one of the Marines looked down at the bodies and quipped, "Have a good day, buddy."

The Marine Corps, in a release Monday, said one Marine pleaded guilty to urinating on the Taliban soldiers and posing for a photograph. Another Marine pleaded guilty to wrongfully videotaping the incident and also posing for a photograph, and a third pleaded guilty to failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties and lying about it.

My husband who has several serious issues (anger, bitterness, controling, bulling the kids, negative, critical) have played a major role in destroying the person I am over the past 10 years.? I see it effecting my kids as well.? I have told him how I feel and need him to get help so that our marriage works.? If not, seperation will be the next step.? Since that conversation, I see no improvments..yes, he is going to counseling, but keeps dishing out the same behaviors and attitudes that continue to hurt me.? I feel like I can't breathe and my health is going down the tubes in the meantime. I keep getting chipped away at and I see no remorse or caring about the damage he has done.? Egypt reopens Gaza border crossing for passengers

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? An Egyptian security official says Egypt has reopened its passenger terminal with the Gaza Strip and resumed normal operations there after nearly three weeks of disruption following a deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers by Islamic militants.

The official said from inside the Rafah crossing that it will be open six days a week, with normal security measures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The closure of the terminal raised tensions between Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Gaza's ruling Hamas, which had hoped Morsi would end the enclave's five-year isolation.

Egypt shut down the terminal after 16 Egyptian soldiers were shot dead by masked gunmen while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Aug. 5.

Can the 'Beef: It's What For Dinner' Guy Help Romney?

In an attempt to make the unsexy world of political advertising somewhat sexy, The Washington Post's Philip Rucker?looks at the ad team Mitt Romney has assembled, a team that predictably calls themselves the "Mad Men." Yes, here comes that old?Mad Men meme again.?Instead of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce , it's something like Minchillo Ferguson Dalthorp O'Connor Van Dusen Salmon. This team has have an arduous task in front of them in the next 10 weeks, as Rucker writes:

The creative team is trying to create an emotional bond between a candidate who reveals little emotion and a still-unsure body politic. And they are trying to tell the story of ?the Obama economy? ? searching what one of them dubbed ?the trail of tears? for powerful voices among the roughly 23?million Americans who are unemployed or underemployed or have stopped looking for work.

And just like SCDP (or more like Ocean's 11, or any cool guy movie where a bunch of these awesome-sounding dudes get together to pull off a major score), each of these guys has a specialty. Here's a brief sampling:

RELATED: Night of the Living Mad Men; Romney the Goofus

Jim "Fergie" Ferguson brings the beef.

RELATED: The GOP's 2012 Enthusiasm Gap

    James Dalthorp?has the ride.

RELATED: Company Mysteriously Disappears After Giving $1 Million to Romney

    Vinny Minchillo?has the laughs?

RELATED: Rick Perry And Mitt Romney Don't Like Each Other Much

Of course the advertising, video editing, and campaign team is a lot bigger than these three "Mad Men" and apparently there's even a bunker equipped with editing suites full of archival footage. It all (almost) makes the next ten weeks of ads sound sexy and exciting which something, no doubt, Don Draper would be proud of.

Study reveals human drive for fair play

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? People will reject an offer of water, even when they are severely thirsty, if they perceive the offer to be unfair, according to a new study funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings have important implications for understanding how humans make decisions that must balance fairness and self-interest.

It's been known for some time that when humans bargain for money they have a tendency to reject unfair offers, preferring to let both parties walk away with nothing rather than accept a low offer in the knowledge that their counterpart is taking home more cash.

In contrast, when bargaining for food, our closes relatives chimpanzees will almost always accept an offer regardless of any subjective idea of 'fairness'.

Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL wanted to see whether humans would similarly accept unfair offers if they were bargaining for a basic physiological need, such as food, water or sex.

The team recruited 21 healthy participants and made 11 of them thirsty by drip-feeding them a salty solution, whilst the remainder received an isotonic solution that had a much smaller effect on their level of thirst. To obtain an objective measure of each individual's need for water, the team measured the salt concentration in their blood. The participants' subjective perception of how thirsty they were was assessed using a simple rating scale.

The participants then separately took part in an ultimatum game. They were given instructions that two of them had been randomly selected to play a game to decide the split of a 500ml bottle of water that could be consumed immediately. One of them would play the part of 'Proposer' and decide how the bottle should be split. The other would be a 'Responder' who could either accept the split and so drink the water offered to them, or reject the split so that both parties would get nothing. The participants knew that they would have to wait a full hour after the end of the game before they would have access to water.

In reality, all of the participants played the part of the Responder. They were presented with two glasses of water with a highly unequal offer that they were told was from the Proposer: the glass offered to them contained 62.5ml, an eighth of the original bottle of water, and the other contained the remaining seven eighths that the Proposer wanted to keep for themselves. They had fifteen seconds to decide whether to accept or reject the offer.

The team found that, unlike chimpanzees, the human participants tended to reject the highly unequal offer, and here that was the case even if they were severely thirsty. The participants' choices were not influenced by how thirsty they actually were, as measured objectively from the blood sample. However, they were more likely to accept the offer if they subjectively felt that they were thirsty.

Dr Nick Wright, who led the study, explains: "Whether or not fairness is a uniquely human motivation has been a source of controversy. These findings show that humans, unlike even our closest relatives chimpanzees, reject an unfair offer of a primary reward like food or water -- and will do that even when severely thirsty. However, we also show this fairness motivation is traded-off against self-interest, and that this self-interest is not determined by how their objective need for water but instead by their subjective perception of thirst. These findings are interesting for understanding how subjective feelings of fairness and self-interested need impact on everyday decisions, for example in the labour market."

powell brower home: a matter of taste

We've mentioned stores like IKEA and Pottery Barn, West Elm, World Market, Home Goods lately - all favorites of ours. However... When I see a room made up of only store bought things, I feel like they have missed the point of?making a home your own. I appreciate and value?custom pieces, custom draperies, custom anything. ?And those things vastly improve the look of a space just by being unique, feeling amazing and expressing a more personal touch. But custom comes with a price! ?And there are so many ways to add custom touches to store bought products to convey a designer effect and achieve a 'look for less', like Bethany showed us?here.

There are many ways to make your home look custom, personal, updated, yet well-loved, and one that evokes family heritage.

    1. ?Artwork of varying types (framed under glass, paintings on canvas, drawings, photos and so much more).

Bethany said she read a wonderful quote the other day : A house without art is a house without soul.

    2. Personal mementoes from travel or family, antiques, heirlooms that help to tell your?story.

    3. ?Mixing in aged pieces or things with a patina with new or updated pieces.

    4. ?Sensory experiences through candles, fresh flowers, greenery or fresh air stimulate memories of far off places or make a memory within your home.

    5. ?A beautiful dish filled with candy or nuts, or a bar cart with varying

beverage choices is a lovely invitation to sit and chat.

    6. If you've tuned in to Powell Brower Home from the beginning, we often reference our favorite?BRAGG concept. ?A simple checklist that we like to run through when completing a space. 7. ?Adding custom touches to storebought or dime-a-dozen furniture or accessories, like?trim, additional fabric accents, new legs, hand dipped legs, paint, nailheads and?O'verlays?can do wonders.

Certain rooms in a home can be designated for the custom?treatment while others you can cut corners with. ?What point are you at in your?life? ?Do you have all custom pieces in your home? ?Do you have mostly store bought? ?Are you at a time in your life when you've had the makeshift, lower cost version and now you're ready for custom?

Or do you get more joy making and repurposing items than buying new? ?We'd love to know.

Whatever your style, it all boils down to TASTE. If you have good taste, you can just about make anything work. But you just can't manufacture good taste.

That's why fashion and decorating are so intertwined. ?A room that evokes good taste are just like the clothes worn by someone with real style. No matter your budget or where you buy your products, taste and style go hand in hand. It's all in the eye of the beholder.?

The ServiceMagic Connection | Five Tips to Simplify Your Kitchen ...

A kitchen remodel can be a long, daunting process. But the rewards, including a big boost in resale value, are great. Create a beautiful space without some of the unnecessary headaches by following this simple advice.

    1. Plan, plan and then plan some more

Sure, planning takes time. But failing to plan can lead to even longer delays. The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends spending six months or more just in the planning stages. This decreases the likelihood that you?ll change your mind mid-project about materials, colors or budget.

Start by looking for design inspiration. Read design magazines, visit home improvement stores and look at pictures online. Armed with style ideas, you can begin planning the layout of the kitchen. Does the current configuration work or could the flow be better? Are there walls that can be removed to open up the space? This doesn?t have to be an exact science; just come up with ideas. Next, make a list of the types of surfaces and materials that you?d pick on an unlimited budget, then make a second list of less expensive options that could work as a compromise if money runs short. Finally, set a budget and resolve to stick to it.

Need additional help? Check out this kitchen planning guide from Consumer Reports.

    2. Tackle the project in stages

If you?re short on cash or overwhelmed by the prospect of tackling such a large project all at once, consider taking on the kitchen remodel in stages. Replace your cabinets and countertops first, then replace your appliances a few months down the road. Save the flooring for last to make sure it fits properly around new cabinets and appliances.

Keep in mind that this approach does not mean you can skip the planning stage. Poor planning is even more dangerous when you tackle the project in stages. Even if you don?t buy the appliances right away, for example, pick the models you want and make sure they will fit in the space. Having to rip out cabinets to make enough room for appliances is a nightmare, to say the least.

    3. Hire a Pro

Hiring a designer comes at a cost, but a pro will significantly reduce your hassle. A designer?s job goes far beyond helping you make style decisions like which countertops and cabinets to buy. He or she can hire and schedule contractors, foresee potential problems and keep the project within time and budget constraints.

    4. Shop for Materials Online

Think you can?t buy flooring or countertops online? Think again. There are plenty of online suppliers that will send free product samples to your home. Typically, you can request up to five at a time with no commitment to buy and no credit card required. In many cases, you don?t even have to return the samples.

Product samples save you the time and hassle of driving all over the place to home improvement, kitchen or flooring stores. Plus, you get to see how the colors and materials will look in your home.

    5. Check Contractor Credentials

There?s nothing worse than dealing with an unreliable contractor. You know, workers that show up only some of the time or, worse, don?t show up at all. Even if you fire the contractor, you?re out time and money.

Before you hire any contractor, ask for references ? and actually check them. Check the company?s record with consumer organizations like the Better Business Bureau. If you?re a member, check Angie?s List. And most importantly, go with your gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is.

Single Mothers Combat Stress by Engaging with Their Children! Who

Probably one of the most interesting things that has happened to me as a result of my blog. I get a phone call out of the blue. This journalist is writing a story about single motherhood and wants to interview me! Awesome!

    Christina

    Published: Sunday, Aug. 19 2012 3:00 a.m. MDT

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865560877/Single-mothers-combat-stress-by-engaging-with-children-new-study-finds.html

Christina Robert, a 44-year-old single mother, is headed out the back door of her home in the outskirts of Minneapolis to fill the dog bowl before it gets dark. But before she does, she turns to her 3-year-old daughter, LuaClaire.

?Do you want to come with me or stay here?? she asks.

?Come!? is her daughter?s response 99 percent of the time.

Though it will take her twice as long to finish the task, Robert regards this as valuable one-on-one time with her daughter. And if asked her opinion, she?ll tell you time spent together is not only to LuaClaire?s pleasure, but also her own.

Spending time with children combats the daily stresses that single mothers face, a new study led by a team of doctorate students at Kansas State University found.

?Being a single mother and being a parent in general is very exhausting,? study author Blake Berryhill said. ?But if a mother is willing to spend time with her children, it can reduce her parental stress because she will feel that in her role as a mom, she is doing an adequate job.?

    Single-handed super women

Compared to married mothers, single mothers are twice as likely to experience a bout of depression and higher levels of chronic stress, according to a study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine in 2001. The study also found that these women have less contact with family and friends and less involvement with church or social groups.

?Single mothers can feel constantly overloaded and overwhelmed at being a parent and trying to fulfill all of their responsibilities,? Berryhill said. Being a single mother brings extra stress, caused by decreased economic resources, longer work hours and a limited social support network.

As a mother with two jobs and a shared custody arrangement, Robert understands the pressures of single motherhood.

?Your life is so stressful,? she said. ?I had no clue when I became a mother that my life was going to change as much as it did and I had no clue that being a single mom was going to be as hard as it was.?

The study followed children, ages 1, 3 and 5, to focus on parental engagement, stress levels and child temperament. Researchers found that spending time with a child through daily activities, such as reading stories, playing games or putting a child to bed, can reduce parental stress by instilling confidence that the mother is doing an adequate job in her role as a parent.

?The time that I have with her is really valuable and really meaningful, and in doing that, I try to set aside the negative things that have gone on and I allow that joy to rejuvenate me,? Robert said. ?It is healing. Kids are so innocent and unconditionally loving.?

Brittany Phelps, a dental assistant living in West Linn, Ore., and single mother to Peytyn, 3, has found that the most simple of moments can ease her stress.

?I was actually thinking ? when I took my daughter to the park how awesome she is and how perfect our afternoons together are after my days working full time,? she said.

Author of ?Confessions of a Scary Mommy? and mother in Baltimore, Jill Smokler, says she feels less stressed when she feels her life is not so off-balanced. She enjoys the day-to-day routine that allows her to see her kids before school and several hours after school, before bed and during dinner together. ?That is perfect for me, having them in big doses but also having space to myself.?

Consistency, the study showed, reaped benefits far more noticeable than time spent intermittently together.

?Our research showed that those daily things, spending time with the child in a daily routine, putting the child to bed, or reading stories to them were what really made the difference,? Berryhill said.

    Creating a family unit

While a single-parent home can be unconventional, mothers such as Phelps work hard to maintain a strong sense of unity.

?We?ll do typical family activities, just the two of us,? Phelps said. They get their family portrait taken once a year and have family prayer together each night.

Robert tries to create a sense of community and a sense of family that goes beyond the two of them. She schedules play dates with other single mothers and their children, and they spend time with other adults she and her daughter have a positive relationship with.

?There?s almost this extended sense of community and family that comes out of this,? Robert said, ?because we don?t have that at home.?

?No matter how much I may miss parts of who I used to be,? Robert wrote on her blog, ?the little girl who calls me Mommy fills an amazing spot in my heart that no one else can ever replace.?

Israel slams SAfrica over 'unacceptable' tags move

The Israeli foreign ministry dismissed as "unacceptable" a decision by the South African cabinet on Wednesday approving the placing of Occupied Palestinian Territory labels on imported goods from Jewish settlements.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said in a statement that the move constitutes "a blatant discrimination based on national and political distinction."

"What is totally unacceptable is the use of tools which, by essence, discriminate and single out, fostering a general boycott," he added.

He said Israel will summon Thursday the South African ambassador in the Jewish state.

Palmor said South Africa's move was without precedent, adding that "this kind of discrimination has not been imposed - and rightly so - in any other case of national, territorial or ethnic conflict."

"Such exclusion and discrimination bring to mind ideas of racist nature which the government of South Africa, more than any other, should have wholly rejected."

Earlier on Wednesday, the South African cabinet directed its trade minister to issue a notice requiring that products are marked so that buyers knew their origin is not Israel, government spokesman Jimmy Manyi told a press briefing.

"This is in line with South Africa's stance that recognises the 1948 borders delineated by the United Nations and does not recognise occupied territories beyond these borders as being part of the state of Israel," he said.

The plan has already met protests in South Africa and local Jewish leaders said Wednesday the community was outraged over what they called "discriminatory, divisive" measures.

"At bottom, they are believed to be motivated not by technical trade concerns but by political bias against the state of Israel. All attempts to discuss these concerns, however, have come to nothing," the South African Jewish Board of Deputies said in a statement.

Barnes and Noble sees sales surge, losses fall as quarter ends in profit

Barnes & Noble has had a quarter worth remembering, bringing in $1.5 billion and reducing its losses to $41 million -- down from $57 million last year. Retail business was up, thanks to the closure of Borders branches and blockbuster sales of Fifty Shades of Grey, while College sales increased quarterly losses by $2 million to $14 million. While online sales fell 7.6 percent and the Nook business remained flat, the company saw digital content purchases skyrocket by 46 percent -- and the company couldn't produce enough GlowLight devices to satisfy demand. Wondering about the company's tie-up with Microsoft? There's still no news beyond that it hopes the new partnership will be up and running by the fall.

Handling Infertility | Natural health | Therapy | Holistic Healing ...

Foods to assist in pregnancyDid you know that stress can prevent you from falling pregnant and that a large number of small stresses are far worse than that one big problem? Did you also know you can test for stress by testing the levels of Cortisol in the body?

Latest studies show that reducing stress can restore normal ovulation. Amenorrhea is a lack of monthly periods and ovulation. It is caused by stress, poor nutrition and sometimes too much exercise. The hormone Cortisol increases when a person is stressed.

A recent study showed that cognitive behavior therapy increased fertility in 80% percent of women and that their Cortisol levels also dropped. Almost 5-10% of women suffer from amenorrhea at some stage and there are many natural supplements to assist.

The definition of infertility applies really only after one year of ?normal? marital relations without contraceptives or if the woman conceives but aborts naturally and repeatedly. There are many causes which in females can range from nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, infections, endometriosis which can lead to blockage of the Fallopian tubes or tumors and developmental anomalies of the organs. Sometimes this is caused by endocrine atrophy after oral contraceptives have been discontinued but this may correct itself in time.

In males causes can be due to sperm deficiencies (low sperm count, impaired motility or other abnormalities). Males are usually involved in 40% of infertility cases. A combination of factors is common and it is also related to anxiety and fatigue.

It is possible that high numbers of natural supplements usually make the body more fertile. These can be stopped once pregnancy occurs and both partners need lifestyle and dietary changes to improve their levels of fitness, lose weight if obese, eliminate tobacco and alcohol, avoid refined carbohydrates such as sugar, soft drinks, chocolate, white four, ice-cream and processed foods.

It is good to have a high vegetable and fruit intake with reasonable amounts of seeds and yogurt. Nuts and seeds are high in kilojoules though so watch how many you eat and a multivitamin is essential.

Natural supplements for females can range from herbs such as golden seal, raspberry, red clover, sarsaparilla and sweet violet. All infections need to be treated as well as Candida albicans and it is a good idea to avoid coffee. An increase in protein, vitamin E and iron is also a good idea.

Males would benefit from Ginseng, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc and a multivitamin. Also it is not a good idea for them to wear tight fitting underwear or pants or to take too hot baths or showers.

If you have had a repeated number of miscarriages herbs such as alfalfa, golden seal, raspberry leaf and sarsaparilla are good. These prior to pregnancy strengthen the uterus but you must also adjust your diet. Tissue salts such as Kali Phos or Nerve 5 are good for nervous strain.

On the no list is too much chocolate, margarine, processed oils, cows milk, tea, coffee, soft drink, cordial and yeast. Swimming and walking are good exercises in moderation.

If you are having problems with fertility or miscarriage though don?t try and do it alone. Contact your natural therapist and follow their instructions. There is lots of natural help around.
