NKorea preps rocket launch that would irk China

According to analysis by SAIS, North Korea has moved two sections of a long-range rocket at the site in preparation for a launch that would alarm both its adversaries and lone ally China. (AP) ? Satellite photos indicate North Korea has moved two sections of a long-range rocket in preparation for a launch that would alarm both its adversaries and lone ally China.

But North Korea has yet to announce its plans, leaving some uncertainty whether and when it will proceed with a launch that would be sure to draw international condemnation.

The U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies said Thursday the recent activity at the Sohae site on North Korea's northwest coast suggests it could be ready to launch a three-stage rocket by the end of the first week in December.

A commercial satellite photo taken Monday shows two long trailers, likely used to carry the first two stages of a rocket, according to an analysis written for 38 North, the institute's website. The trailers are parked near the main missile assembly building, where it says rocket stages would be checked before moving to the launch pad for takeoff about a half-mile away.

In April, North Korea fired a rocket from the same site in a failed attempt to launch a satellite into space, drawing U.N. censure as that technology can be easily converted into use for missiles. The launch dashed prospects for a resumption of international aid-for-disarmament talks.

South Korean officials confirmed Thursday there are signs of preparations at the rocket site. A launch in the next few weeks would be seen in Seoul as timed for South Korea's Dec. 19 presidential election.

Victor Cha, a former White House director of Asia policy, said Pyongyang has a track record of reacting to elections in both the U.S. and South Korea in provocative ways, most recently when President Barack Obama took office in 2009. North conducted a rocket and nuclear test within four months.

Another motivating factor for the North could be that South Korea recently won U.S. approval to expand its ballistic-missile range, and this week, was readying its own satellite launch. However, it scrapped those launch plans Thursday, citing technical problems.

North Korea conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, and Washington says Pyongyang uses long-range rocket launches to develop missiles that could target the United States, although it is not yet believed to have miniaturized a nuclear device to mount on a missile.

A rocket launch would not only dismay the U.S. and its allies, but the North's chief ally and source of economic support, China, which is midway through a leadership transition.

"If North Korea does carry out a launch, Beijing will not be happy," said Evans Revere, a former senior U.S. State Department official and expert on East Asia. "It flies in the face of China's request for North Korea to reduce tensions in the region and not escalate them."

Past launches have happened in spring or summer when weather conditions are better, but according to the analysis on the institute's website 38 North, there are several telltale signs that one is being readied now.

As well as the trailers, the images show empty tanks in four locations suggest fueling preparations. There's work under way at an instrumentation site that would monitor a launch. Also, temporary structures for keeping the snow off cars have been erected near a building used to house visiting VIPs.

But any launch could still be weeks away. The analysis notes that North Korea has yet to provide notification for international flight and shipping of splashdown zones for the used rocket stages, as it did before the April launch. Nor has it filed a plan for a frequency for a signal that would be emitted by a satellite.

David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the launch preparation so soon after the April failure "calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong." North Korea has yet to successfully test a rocket with a range of more than 800 miles.

Another failure would embarrass young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, not yet a year in the job after the death of longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, his father.

New genetic test detects early breast cancer and identifies future risk ...

Bethesda, MD?Physicians may now be better at detecting breast cancer than ever before, but much more work remains to ensure accurate diagnosis is possible and especially to assess future risk. That's why researchers from Germany have been working to develop a new test of gene action to predict cancer risk both at first diagnosis and into the future. In a new research report appearing in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal, researchers show that the various genetic switches, which are turned on and off in the regular development of every cell in the body, can be analyzed in minute detail to determine the presence or risk of breast cancer growth.

"We hope that our results help to develop tools to identify breast cancer patients when tumors are still small, and eventually curable," said Clarissa Gerhauser, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Division of Epigenomics and Cancer Risk Factors at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany. "These tools might hopefully also help to predict the progression of tumor development and guide decisions on cancer treatment."

To make this advance, Gerhauser and colleagues extracted DNA from 10 small tumor tissue samples and 10 normal breast tissues from breast cancer patients. They made small fragments from the extracted DNA and identified the genetic switches within those fragments. By comparing the results from various combinations of DNA fragments, scientists discovered which switches were more prevalent in tumor tissue than in normal breast tissue. The methods used to quantify the switches are extremely sensitive, making it feasible that small biopsies would be sufficient for analysis and testing.

"This is a milestone. The method described detects activity at the genetic level, which often occurs well before any outward symptoms occur," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "Not only could this allow for earlier diagnosis of breast cancer and more accurate risk assessment, but eventually, this technique might be used in other types of cancer as well."

Has Lenovo's IdeaTab Lynx just been spotted on the FCC's holodeck?

Lenovo Windows 8 tablet spotted on the FCCs holodeck

As you can see from the picture, somewhere, deep within the FCC's subterranean Washington bunker is a Holodeck. Down there, brave scientists seem to be examining a Lenovo-branded Windows tablet that shares some stylings with the company's Transformer-esque IdeaTab Lynx. Given that the holiday season is nearly upon us, and FCC certification is normally a sign of impending availability, perhaps we won't have long to wait before we learn the truth.

Navy, DoD, Developer Announce Wind Farm Agreement to Preserve Training Mission in South Texas By Kenneth Hess, Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division Public Affairs

NAVAL AIR STATION (NAS) KINGSVILLE, Texas (NNS) ? Today, officials from the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of the Navy (Navy), E.ON Climate & Renewables North America, LLC (ECRNA), and Petronila Wind Farm, LLC, owned by ECRNA (Petronila Wind), announced a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to allow the developer to build and operate new wind turbines in Nueces County, Texas while working to protect the Navy?s ability to continue its training mission at NAS Kingsville and NAS Corpus Christi. Representatives from each organization participated in a ceremony and base tour to commemorate the agreement.

Signatories to the agreement include John Conger, Acting Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Installations and Environment; Joseph Ludovici, Principal Deputy (Acting) Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment; John Quinn, Deputy Director, Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division; VADM William French, Commander, Navy Installations Command; Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, Commander, Navy Region Southeast; Capt. David Edgecomb, Commanding Officer, NAS Corpus Christi; Capt. Mark McLaughlin, Commanding Officer, NAS Kingsville; Paul Bowman, Vice President of Petronila Wind; and Steve Trenholm, Chief Executive Officer, ECRNA. ?

Under the MOA, ECRNA will install and operate up to 100 wind turbines at the Petronila Wind Farm site.?

?The Navy is at the forefront of alternative energy use and production, and the Navy supports such projects when they are compatible with our mission," said Rear Adm. Scorby. "The agreement will enable this wind turbine project to move forward while putting measures in place that work to preserve vital pilot training capability at NAS Kingsville and NAS Corpus Christi.?

Under the agreement, ECRNA will provide $750,000 in funding to DoD for researching, testing and implementing solutions to mitigate potential impacts.? Mitigation efforts could include upgrades that allow the Navy radars to more accurately detect aircraft; optimizing radars to ?ignore? signals received from wind turbines, incorporating new systems that fill in radar gaps, and other technical modifications.? To reduce the potential of radar interference, the new turbines will be limited to 500 feet in height and will be confined to one 5 by 7 mile site within the existing Petronila Wind Farm project boundary.

The agreement establishes a specific set of procedures the Navy and ECRNA will use to safely curtail wind turbines when and if needed, and to document and address emerging concerns. In addition, Navy, DoD, and Petronilla Wind will form a joint working group to study the effectiveness of the mitigation measures implemented?

?This agreement is a collaborative effort that proves the military and the wind industry can find solutions that protect bases and still allow responsible development,? said Steve Trenholm, CEO, ECRNA.

The Navy and the Department of Defense will continue working closely with renewable energy developers and local communities in South Texas to ensure local wind turbine projects can coexist with the Navy mission.

The Consultant Price is Right | Business 2 Community

A consultant is a professional who provides professional or expert advice in a particular field or job. Right now, the consulting business is booming! Global consulting industry revenues will be about $391 billion by the end of 2012, which represents reasonable growth from $366 billion in 2011. But, what really goes into becoming a consultant?

The average start up for a business consultant is anywhere from $100-$20,000. There are many different fields of consulting and depending on which area of expertise you decide to enroll will help determine the costs to consider.

Marketing consultants spend an average of $7,462 a year on marketing. About 22% of consultants spend the most time on networking while 38% of consultants say that referrals make them the most money. Other consulting occupations to consider are transportation, office supplies and insurance. The average monthly insurance premium for individual coverage in 2011 was $183 a month. These costs included the setup fee, franchise tax, annual report and registration fee, and income and stock tax.

Another thing to consider is whether to be an individual consultant or a full time employee. Choosing to be a consultant over a full time employee has its benefits, but it can also be risky. If you choose to be a consultant, you get to choose your own hours, take vacations when you want, set your own fees, pick clients, refuse assignments, and work on a variety of projects. However, the risks of not working full time is the scare of not having a steady and regular paycheck, no administrative help, no benefits or health care, no tech support, and other things employees take for granted.

To set your fees when becoming a consultant you?ll need to consider how you want to get paid. Majority of consultants do it one way or the other ? by the hour or by the project. Strategy consultants usually command the steepest fees. Followed by operations management, human resources, and IT gurus. To set your rates you can either base them on the market and what the market is prepared to pay for by the opportunity and how much you would make if you did something else.

The top fields in consulting currently are computer and information systems, human resources, management, environmental and conservation, accounting, and sales marketing and PR. So, do you think a career in consulting is in your future? Where do you fit in?

Norquist: No GOP fingerprints on tax hikes

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist said Wednesday that Republicans need to have ?credible? separation from any tax hike as part of a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff ? in order to make a case to voters in 2014 and 2016 that their vision is distinct from that of Democrats.

The party can?t ?have their fingerprints on the murder weapon,? Norquist told POLITICO?s Mike Allen at a Playbook Breakfast.

Norquist: Cole's 'interesting tactic'

Norquist: Fiscal cliff is d?j? vu

Although several Republicans have expressed willingness to raise taxes as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations, Norquist dismissed the statements as ?impure thoughts? and said he wasn?t concerned that any of them would actually vote to raise taxes.

?I?m not planning on losing the tax debate we?re having right now. But the tax issue will be more powerful in 2014, 2016 than today,? he said.

?If the Republicans lose in such a way that they have their fingerprints on the murder weapon, then you have a problem,? Norquist said. The party needs to ?have clarity between their approach and the Democrats, and I mean credible clarity, not just ?in their own mind clarity, this is what we secretly mean to do, even though we seem to be having tea with guys doing bad things.??

He stressed that he did not want Congress to go over the fiscal cliff, but said negotiations should be on C-SPAN to get the best deal possible. Norquist argued that sequestration would not be a bad thing even though it would mean deep cuts to the Pentagon; the need to lower spending is too critical and defense shouldn?t be exempted, he said.

?You need to have this conversation in public, you need to be online so you can have the moral the higher ground,? he said. ?This is kind of a d?j? vu all ? with the debt-ceiling thing. And people asked, ?Do you want to default?? And I said, ?No, I want to save two-trillion dollars.? Which is, by the way, what we did. And, by the way, we won that fight. We got the spending cuts and didn?t get a tax increase.?

He suggested Republicans should push for a one-year extension of all the Bush tax cuts and then demand that Congress come up with comprehensive tax reform as part of any deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

Norquist said by having negotiations in public, Republicans would be able to ?change the playing field? from raising taxes to holding Democrats? feet to the fire over spending cuts. Republicans could have the upper hand by challenging the President on not cutting spending.

?We have a spending problem, not a failure to raise taxes problem,? Norquist said.

Still Norquist said that revenue could be achieved through tax reform and economic growth. Raising taxes, he said, would not solve the country?s economic woes.

?I?m all in favor of real revenue, not imaginary revenue,? he said.

He would not directly answer Allen?s questions if there was wiggle room for Republicans to raise taxes without breaking his no-new-taxes pledge. But he did call Rep. Tom Cole?s (R-Okla.) proposal for Republicans to agree to a tax cut for 98 percent of Americans and negotiate the top rates later ?an interesting tactic.?

Plume update removes direct messages from lockscreen widget

Plume for Twitter

There have been a lot of concerns about security since Google implemented lockscreen widgets in Android 4.2. Some may have concerns over how much information is actually accessible from these lockscreen widgets, and with no guidelines on what is and isn't okay, some developers are taking it upon themselves to implement some of their own security measures. Plume has decided to remove the DM (Direct Message) tab from its lockscreen widget, and now you can only see how many unread messages there are. The widget is otherwise the exact same as the one available on the homescreen.

Of course the best security policy is to not put any widgets on the lockscreen -- and use a PIN, pattern or password lock on the device -- but its good to see developers taking these things into consideration.

Must See HDTV (November 26th - December 2nd)

Must See HDTV November 26th December 2nd

It's that time friends, the weekend when we say goodbye to the college football regular season. While there's plenty of NBA, college basketball, college hockey, and NHL action to tide us over, it just won't be the same until the bowls get into full swing. TNT is bringing back a couple of shows from fall hiatus, and we've got a few Blu-ray 3D titles hitting shelves. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Walking Dead
After an often lackluster second season (until the finale), AMC's hit show has been firing on all cylinders since then and we're actually disappointed that we're wrapping up the first half of season three so soon. Between goings-on at the jail and in town, there's sure to be plenty of action, people choosing sides and, oh yeah, zombies.
(AMC, December 2nd, 9PM)

College Football
This weekend the college football regular season comes to a close, with several conference championships and a couple of other rivalry games that will play into bowl selections. We'll find out who will be joining Notre Dame in the Championship Game once the SEC title has been awarded, and where everyone else is going Sunday night. Whether you love the current system or love to hate it, cherish it, since after next year we're going to a playoff and fans will have to be angry about a slightly different set of circumstances.

MLS Cup
While much of the news is about David Beckham's departure from MLS after this weekend, there's still a game to be played. LA takes on Houston Saturday afternoon, so if you prefer your football played mostly with one's feet, you know where to tune in.

FILE - In this June 15, 2007 file photo, a makeshift memorial to Kimberly Vaughn, and her three children Abigayle, 12, Cassandra, 11, and Blake, 8, is seen outside their home in Oswego, Ill. Christopher Vaughn, who was convicted in the 2007 slayings of his wife and three children, is asking for a new trial and a judge in Joliet, Ill., is expected to announce his decision Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. His September trial overlapped with the trial of Drew Peterson, the former suburban Chicago police officer convicted of killing his third wife and whose case had been made into a TV movie. Vaughn's attorney argues that part of the reason his client didn't get a fair trial was because the press conferences held by Peterson's lawyers outside the courthouse damaged his own credibility as a defense attorney. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast, File)

(AP) ? An Illinois man convicted of killing his wife and three children does not deserve a new trial, a judge ruled Tuesday, rejecting a defense attorney's argument that an unrelated, high-profile trial might have influenced jurors.

Christopher Vaughn was convicted of fatally shooting his family so he could start a new life in the Canadian wilderness. His September trial overlapped with the trial of Drew Peterson, the former suburban Chicago police officer convicted of killing his third wife and whose case had been made into a TV movie.

Vaughn's attorney, George Lenard, argued that part of the reason his client didn't get a fair trial was because the news conferences held by Peterson's lawyers outside the courthouse damaged his own credibility as a defense attorney.

But Will County Judge Daniel Rozak dismissed that argument Tuesday, saying there is no evidence that the jurors at Vaughn's trial considered the actions of Peterson's attorneys or were even aware of the news conferences.

Vaughn was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder ? charges that carry a mandatory life sentence ? after a 5 1/2 week trial for the 2007 deaths of his wife, 12-year-old daughter, 11-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. The judge's decision Tuesday meant that the court immediately proceeded with Vaughn's sentencing hearing.

On Monday, Lenard had argued that Peterson's attorneys made comments that were so detrimental to the reputation of court that they hurt his credibility with jurors in Vaughn's trial.

He noted that at one news conference, Peterson's lawyers jokingly said, "Stacy who?" when asked what effect Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, who vanished in 2007, might have on Peterson's trial in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

"That gave defense attorneys, all of us, a black eye," Lenard told the judge. "Nobody ever said to me that made defense attorneys look good."

Prosecutors scoffed at Leonard's argument, saying jurors made the right decision based on "overwhelming" evidence against Vaughn. Assistant State's Attorney Mike Fitzgerald noted that Lenard could have asked for a delay to Vaughn's trial if he was so concerned about the media spectacle surrounding Peterson's trial, but he did not.

Investigators said Vaughn surprised his family with news that he was taking them to a water park the morning of June 14, 2007, but pulled off the road soon after starting the trip. Prosecutors allege he first shot his wife, then twice shot each of his children ? who were buckled in the back seat ? and then shot himself in the leg and wrist to make it seem like his wife was the shooter.

Prosecutors said the slayings were part of Vaughn's plan to start a new life in the Canadian wilderness.

Cameron Bailey on Indian Film's Global Appeal - Hollywood Reporter

As a regular visitor to India, Toronto Film Festival artistic director Cameron Bailey has always been a strong supporter of the country's vibrant film sector. He demonstrated that support earlier this year when TIFF's City to City program showcased films from Mumbai. While visiting? the Film Bazaar in Goa, which is organized by India's National Film Development Corporation, Bailey sat down with THR to discuss the Indian film sector's evolution, how it compares with China and why Bollywood stars are having crossover success in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter: There seems to be a new energy around India's indie scene right now. What do you make of this vibe at the Film Bazaar?

Cameron Bailey: I am hopeful for a greater diversity of Indian cinema... There are projects at Film Bazaar which are being made in different regions and languages, some for the first time. That I think has a real richness that can be tapped. The stories of the smaller cultural groups - whether they are tribal communities or far removed from bustling Mumbai ? I want to see more of them and that's beginning to happen.

PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival Dailies: Photos of the Fest's Biggest Stars
?
THR: Is there a unique Indian voice that you are beginning to hear now?

Bailey: That's an interesting question. Political restrictions in a country like Iran have produced a very unique cinema. India doesn't have those kind of restrictions but there could be restrictions of the marketplace which exerts an enormous commercial influence on Indian filmmakers. And this can be as damaging as political restrictions because it limits what you can do. What I like is when filmmakers start engaging with this challenge: they don't accept it or reject but contest it. And that's what happened in Iran. You are right next door to China with a big market and thriving scene.
?
THR: But it seems China has developed its own voice via its martial arts epics. Do you think India will have multiple voices?
?
Bailey: Of course, there are so many languages here to start with so India has to have multiple voices. If you look at the India-China comparison a little more, China is usually engaging with historical stories. But in India what you have is a conflict between tradition and modernity. Its in every element of Indian society ? from the generation conflict to the rural-urban divide. So if there is a voice then this conflict could be a recurring theme in Indian cinema.
?
THR: Generally, how is Indian cinema evolving in your opinion?
?
Bailey: When I started programming Indian cinema in 2005 at Toronto, I saw a kind of split between mainstream Bollywood and the arthouse scene. The big change I have seen since is there are now filmmakers who pay attention to the commercial market but are also making personal films in a more independent way. You see this in western Europe but not so much in India. This is gratifying to see that filmmakers are seeing both sensibiltiies and they know their audiences are not just Indian or the diaspora but global.
?
THR: How is the international perception of Indian cinema changing?
?
Bailey: The fact that the head of Fortissimo Films (Michael J. Werner) is here at Film Bazaar in Goa says a lot. Seven years ago he was not attending an event like this, which now has people from Tribeca and Cannes. We are here paying attention to the enormous potential beyond the commercial arena. There is no country on earth like India where filmmaking is so vital and productive. The quality of film technicians is also unmatched. But I still think some filmmakers are paying too much attention to the domestic audience and that might be a controversial thing to say but I think there's a wider world out there. Look at Scandivania which has a small domestic market but they have filmmakers like Lars von Trier who are known globally. As an Indian filmmaker you have to be clear who is your audience. If it is the strong domestic market that is absolutely fine but if you have global aspirations then you will have to think differently.

STORY: Toronto Film Fest's Cameron Bailey to Curate Bell Lightbox Film Series
?
THR: With Hollywood studios fortifying their India presence what do you see ahead?
?
Bailey: People looking at commercial cinema from outside sometimes stick too closely to the formula and they may not always succeed. So the initial attempts by Warner and Sony to produce Bollywood films were not so successful. As an example, Korea offers an interesting case study with filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and Park Chon-Wook (Oldboy). They are now both making films in Hollywood for studios. The South Korean model is to make thrillers but they were arthouse and very intense with thriller elements, yet they had a kind of extreme quality which came from auteur filmmaking. And that attracted the attention of the West via festivals and hence Hollywood. But they were also high on technical qualities, which India already has. Like food, films also need a special flavoring. Indian food in Toronto is differently flavored than in India and you can see that in films. So you have to come up with the right flavor.
?
THR: What was the response to Toronto's City to City program this year which featured films from Mumbai?
?
Bailey: It opened a door to a new kind of Indian cinema because the big Bollywood films are so dominant and people think that's all there is from India. So for the first time a number of people at the festival realised these films don't have songs or big stars or fantasies but are real about contemporary India. That was a huge success as I wanted to break down that image of Indian cinema just being Bollywood. We have showcased arthouse filmmakers in the past whose films are more connected to poetry rather than popcorn. Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur was a popcorn movie but it's something like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
?
THR: There's always been this long running debate about India's presence on the international festival circuit which is quite low given the size of the industry. Do you see that changing?
?
Bailey: At Toronto we show about six films from India in a regular year, though this year we had 16 because of the City to City program. But for a country producing a thousand films, India's representation is low. Compare that to France from where we are showing an average of 15 films though the country produces far fewer films than India. But they have a whole industry of filmmakers who produce films that travel the festival circuit. I think that is now beginning to happen in India when you see directors like Ashim Ahluwalia (Miss Lovely) or Dibakar Banerjee (Shanghai). They are as sophisticiated as anyone working in Paris. They are informed about international trends and as long as they can navigate that very complicated set of influences between what the Indian market wants, what the world wants and what they want for themselves, then they are going to be the ones to produce the films that will travel.

STORY: Festival Director Cameron Bailey Embraces Public Aspect of Event (Q&A)
?
THR: But how viable can that be?
?
Bailey: That really is upto the Indian audience if they want to come out and support these kind of films. And its upto the industry to deliver these kind of cinemas. What is sorely lacking in India is that there are no arthouse cinemas. I am sure there are going to be lots of people who want to see a good Indian arthouse film only if there were enough cinemas for them. Exhibition and distribution has to change.
?
THR: Taking a long term view, what is the image of India that you would like the rest of the world to see through films?
?
Bailey: I want the world to see contempoary urban India because there is that stereotypical and ridiculous image of poverty that has to change. You know how French cinema communicates an image of France as being urbane, cosmopolitan, sophisticated and romantic??Why not have films from India that show how incredibly cosmopolitian and modern Mumbai or Delhi are? I want to see more of that. On the other side I am also transported when I see parts of India that people don't even know existed as seen in Frozen by Shivajee Chandrabhushan which was filmed entirely in the remote regions of Ladakh.

?THR: A country is also known by its talent. What are your views on Indian talent given some are making international inroads?
?
Bailey: I think there is enormous acting talent in India but often they haven't been directed well. And that's because they have been directed for purely commercial reasons. With the right combination of good writing, direction and performance, these actors could have international appeal. Nana Patekar is one of the best character actors not just in India, but the world. Abhay Deol is incredibly charismatic and is becoming the face of new Indian cinema. He could be like Dustin Hoffman was in the seventies, an actor who embodies a revolution in cinema. Konkona Sen Sharma can be very good as well. They have the talent but they need everything else around them. Its a good start for Indian actors who have started to appear in mainstream Hollywood films (like Irrfan Khan in The Amazing Spider-Man) but it can't end there. They can hold up against big Hollywood stars and I am not surprised. For instance, Anupam Kher's performance in Silver Linings Playbook is terrific.

Dating sites pair politicos by their leanings

Are you looking for someone to bring home to the family who likes taking long walks on the beach, playing frisbee in the park and?voting on the same side of the ticket as you?

With the American electorate increasingly divided between Republicans and Democrats, three men have decided to play yenta with politics. JD Beebe, Alex Fondrier and Francois Briard are the team behind Political Matchmakers, a company that runs two separate online dating sites: Red State Date and Blue State Date.

The sites match users for compatibility based on their political leanings, "because no one should have to date a liberal," the host says at the end of a tongue-in-cheek video promoting RedStateDate.com.

The slogan is reversed in the BlueStateDate.com video.

In the dating world, "Status quo is to avoid talking politics at all costs," Fondrier said. But for most partners, politics plays a more important role than looks or personality, according to a study out of the University of Nebraska.

Beebe compared Red State and Blue State Date to sites like Geek 2 Geek , a site that brags it's "the best place on the net to meet geeks."

But for some singles, politics are their main passion. "People crowding the rallies, people in public relations, groups of people who work in government, in Washington, D.C., and the state capitals," Foundrier said.

"There's obviously tons of people out there like this," Beebe said. "Let's make something for them."

When users first sign up at one of the sites, they're asked for standard information like gender, looks and marital status.

But what sets these sites apart is what comes next: Users rank where they stand on issues like the Patriot Act, abortion and fiscal policy. Then they're given a score that tells them how liberal or conservative they are and serves as a basis to help find their matches.

There's no "Conservatives Keep Out" sign on the Blue State Date site, but Beebe and Fondrier say they hope eventually to offer the option of matching users to people on the other end of the political spectrum. There are some self-identified conservatives who've chosen to be on the blue side, and vice versa. The founders aren't about to kick them off.

"We're learning along with the users how they want to best use it," Fondrier said.

The sites have seen thousands of users sign up since their launch a couple of weeks before the election.

Does their success mean there's no hope that Dems and the GOP can ever get along?

"When it comes down to the everyday American, I think they're willing to befriend people from the other side of the aisle, no problem," Fondrier said. "But I think in a long term relationship, marriage, raising children, that's a little bit different."

"That decision has already been made long before we came onto the scene."

Shoplift suspect dies in confrontation with Walmart workers

A man suspected of shoplifting two DVD players from a Lithonia, Ga., Walmart today died after an altercation with two store employees and a contract security guard, prompting a police investigation.

The man, whose identity has not been released, exited through the front door of the store at 1:30 a.m. today and was confronted in the parking lot, according to DeKalb County police.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the employees on top of the middle-aged man, according to a police report obtained by ABC News affiliate WSB-TV. When an officer bent down to handcuff the suspect, he noticed there was no resistance.

At that point, the officer noticed the suspect was bleeding from the nose and mouth, according to the report. He was transported to DeKalb Medical-Hillandale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"This is truly a sad situation. We don't know all of the facts right now. We're in the process of working with law enforcement to determine all of the facts and cooperating and providing any information we have to assist in the investigation," Dianna Gee, Walmart spokesperson, said in a statement issued to ABC News.

Gee said the contract security guard will no longer be providing services to the retailer. The two store employees have been suspended with pay while Walmart assists police in the investigation.

"Our associates are trained that the safety of our customers and our associates is our first priority," Gee said. "No amount of merchandise is worth someone's life. Associates are trained to disengage from situations that would put themselves or others at risk. That being said, this is still an active investigation and we're working with police to provide any assistance."

Notre Dame vs. USC LIVE UPDATES: No. 1 Irish Face Max Wittek, Trojans With BCS Title Chance On Line

The Irish are heading for the BCS title game.

USC still playing this out. 4 seconds to go. 3rd and 1 after completion and spike.

Flags out for roughing the kicker. ND declines. USC has the ball with 19 seconds.

Irish will have to punt the ball to USC with some time remaining.

Irish are letting the clock run down and Trojans just used their last timeout.

12 yards on first down for Riddick and ND has some breathing room to operate. The clock is ticking under two minutes. Timeout Notre Dame at 1:56.

Wittek's play actio throw is low and Vainuka can't control it. That's Notre Dame ball and that might be it for the Trojans.

Clock ticks under 3 as safeties blow up another rush attempt. This already happened.

USC facing 3rd and goal after Wittek keeper goes nowhere. Run it again? Another throw?

Wittek struggling on touch passes to Lee. He's got a nasty fastball but not much else.

Another look at Lee and another PI flag. USC inches closer to goal line.

Lee blatantly held and every official throws his flag. 1st and goal. Again.

USC backs up to the 7-yard line. McNeal gets 3 yards back.

Wittek finally connects with Lee on a deep ball. That's a 53-yard completion and USC has 1st and goal.

Lee gets USC out to the 45. That's a good start.

Brindza kicks another field goal and stretches lead back to 9. With under six minutes, USC needs to scores.

Golson's throw goes harmlessly out of bounds and ND will try another short field goal.

Golson keeping it after the timeout but he's met in the hole and kept out of the end zone. 3rd and goal.

Irish take timeout as play clock was running out. 2nd and goal coming up.

Riddick appears wrangled in the backfield but Riddick spins away from two would-be tacklers. Irish have a first and goal. He's carrying his team as Golson has faded in the second half.

Riddick breaks century mark and continues to break tackles. It's 1st and 10 for Irish inside USC 40.

Atkinson breaks off a 38-yard return to get out to the 44.

21-yard field goal and USC cuts deficit to 19-13.

USC can't find another touchdown after timeout. Field goal attempt coming after Wittek fires high toward Lee.

Rotherham: Truth and Politics ? The Not So Big Society

The only time I read my local paper is at the?Indian?takeaway. Whilst waiting for my korahi chicken yesterday evening, I disinterestedly flicked?through the familiar mix of parking problems, noisy neighbours and oversubscribed schools. I nearly skipped the article buried on page 11 about a man who died after an error from his GP, because I was pondering whether to order a popadom. Then I stopped and read it: it was my GP.

Our doctor is kind, caring and hard-working. He treats people as individuals and always makes time for them. On this occasion, the surgery computer system did not indicate that the prescriptions for the drugs his elderly patient required for a heart condition had stopped after the man was released from hospital. Several months on, he relapsed and sadly died. The coroner praised the doctor for his honesty. I can?t recall the actual verdict but the death could have been prevented.

Today?s Daily Telegraph didn?t lead with an avoidable death or for that matter any death. The case of foster carers who allegedly had children in their care removed from them because they were UKIP members has run on all media. It?s been top of 5Live news all day, for example. You would expect Nigel Farage to have an opinion but Michael Gove has swiftly weighed in too. As I write, Milliband is being quoted. Cue outrage at social work.

If UKIP membership is the only reason why these children were moved, I don?t agree with it. They should have stayed where they were. The council said on the news this morning that the children were going to move on anyway. This may be the case. However, the original Telegraph report says the boy was moved the?following?day and his two sisters soon after. If this is accurate, it does not sound like a planned move to me.

I qualify my remarks with ?if accurate? for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the report does not appear to have any corroboration from other sources. They may exist but it?s based heavily on the carers? account. I thought journalists cross-checked, especially on a headline story, but this is different.

Secondly, it doesn?t chime with my?experiences?over the years. Judgments?about the?capabilities of??carers are never made on the basis of a single piece of information, unless of course it relates to a child protection matter or allegation, in which case prompt action must be taken to safeguard the child.

In this case, you would like to think that other evidence would have been considered, such as the history of the carers over their fostering career, the progress of the children in placement, any evidence that the actual behaviour of the carers had negatively impacted on the children (as ?distinct from their membership of a political party) and the wishes and feelings of the children. Bear in mind that the Fostering Standards prohibit changes in children?s careplans without consultation unless there is a real and immediate need.?If the local authority has other information, they could not possibly break confidentiality and share it?publicly,?which offers no protection to the storm of media outrage.

Some of the criticism is misinformed. Farage was calling for the immediate reinstatement of the carers but they are still?approved?carers, it?s just this placement that has ended. Also, he might think about considering the children?s needs first, which is the law after all.

However, what is most significant is why this is a story at all. My doctor will carry on practising, as he should. The competence of the medical profession has not been called into question because a man died. Yet in the case of the Rotherham foster carers, the ability of the entire social work profession has immediately become the issue. This is all the corroboration the Telegraph needed. We know social workers do this sort of thing, don?t we. Leaving aside the fact that as I have already suggested, any judgement is based on incomplete evidence, this is not about the actions of individual social workers or even the authority itself, it?s about how lousy our profession?supposedly?is in making these?judgement.

The?implication?clearly is that social workers make snap judgments based on dogma and preconceived ideas. More than this, we are driven by political ideology. In much of the coverage, this deeply flawed and?prejudiced?perspective has not been significantly questioned. This must be the case ? what other reason could there be? It shows how little the public still understand about what we do.

This may have been a carefully considered decision or something that was rushed. It could have been a?wrong?decision. If so, hold up our hands, but it does not prove one single thing about how social work as a whole assesses the needs of children.

You would think the minister, our minister, might at the very least inject a sense of perspective. Not so. ?The wrong decision in the wrong way for the wrong reasons,? he said. I humbly suggest he cannot know that for certain. But there are bigger issues at play here and it suits him to use the?profession?for which he is?responsible for other reasons.

Rotherham is holding a by-election. It?s Labour-held, therefore this decision is the responsibility of the Labour authority even though it would have been made by social workers, i.e. officials not politicians. The assumption that this is a political issue has not been called into question. No coincidence.

Also, the consultation period for government proposals to diminish the?significance?of culture and origin in decisions about adoption placements is coming to an end. This has been well-trailed over the past year ? see some of my previous articles ? as a way of removing what the government?characterise?as impediments to swifter adoption. It?s an important proposal that has?considerable?opposition as well as its proponents. Whichever position you take, it?s disturbing that a matter about the health and well-being of three little children and public confidence in social work becomes a chance for?political?points-scoring. ?We might look back at this episode in future and ask if anyone truly cares.

November 25, 2012 2:00 AM

What a difference a year makes in October total sales and average prices of residential real estate in the Seacoast.

While improvements in those categories were spotty in a comparison of October to September, the improvements are dramatic for last month versus October 2011, according to an analysis of data from the Rockingham County Registry of Deeds.

Data was gleaned for single-home and condominium sales in Brentwood, East Kingston, Epping, Exeter, Greenland, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Kensington, New Castle, Newfields, Newington, Newmarket, North Hampton, Portsmouth, Rye, Seabrook and Stratham.

The total value of sales for this region in October was $60.1 million, a 17 percent jump over September and a 51.2 percent leap over October 2011.

The number of transactions also jumped: There were 117 house sales and 64 condo sales in October; 99 house sales and 50 condo sales in September; versus 85 house sales and 25 condo sales in October 2011.

"The Seacoast Board of Realtors is encouraged by the continued market improvement, considering how far we've come," said Lauren Kane, board president.

With what she called "continued soft sales prices," she expressed concern that future deficit-cutting measures in Washington, D.C., could harm the housing market.

"We are hopeful that the president will work with Congress to support the continuation of the mortgage interest deduction and allow for loosening of credit standards, both of which will ensure continued market recovery," she said.

Communities that saw significant increases in both home and condo sales values include Exeter, Hampton and Stratham in the year-over-year numbers.

In Exeter, the total value of sales in October was $7.2 million. In October 2011 it was $4.1 million. Stratham's total was $4.4 million in October and was $1.7 million the previous year. Average prices were also on the uptick for both homes and condos in year over year comparisons.

The average price of a home that sold in the region in October was $467,034, while the average price of a condo was $262,532. That compares with $393,830 for a home in October 2011 and $213,559 for a condo.

In September, the average price of a home was $421,229 and the average price of a condo was $318,581.

There were ups and downs through specific communities. In Portsmouth, for example, average prices in October were lower than they were in September and in October 2011.

The Seacoast Board of Realtors' analysis of its 13 sample towns showed a 47.5 percent increase in single family sales over a year ago. It said October was the fourth straight month that sales exceeded 2011 levels and the eighth of 10 months that registered gains. The towns are Seabrook, Hampton Falls, Hampton, North Hampton, Rye, New Castle, Portsmouth, Newington, Greenland, Stratham, Exeter, Newfields and Newmarket.

It noted the number of active single-family listings reached the lowest total for the year, a statistic that could forecast increased prices over the winter.

On the foreclosure front, according to the N.H. Housing Finance Authority, there were 263 foreclosure deed recordings in New Hampshire in September, a decrease of 13 percent from foreclosure deeds in September 2011, and a decrease of 6.7 percent from the prior month.

The cumulative total for January through September 2012 is nearly 4 percent below the same period in 2011 and 13 percent below the same period in 2010.

"With signs of improvement in overall economic conditions, as well as some improvement in the statewide and regional housing markets, there is reason to believe the number of new foreclosures in New Hampshire will continue to decline," the authority said in a statement. "However, the likely pace of improvement in foreclosures will be slow. During that time period, the negative influence of foreclosed and distressed properties on the housing market will continue."

Advertisers, Facebook And Fan Lists - Business Insider

Larry Kim

Wordstream's Larry Kim

?

Larry Kim, CEO at search engine marketing company Wordstream, has a question for Facebook's ad sales people: Why do you sell advertisers' customer lists to rival brands?

Kim noticed that ad buyers on Facebook can target users by "Interest," and that plenty of interests are actually brand names. Thus, Coca-Cola could, if it wanted, target anyone who listed "Pepsi" as an interest in their profile.

This doesn't sound too distressing. But Kim frames the issue like this:

It?s an outrage because advertisers spend tons of money and effort to build up a following of thousands or millions of Facebook fans, which can then be exploited by competitors.

Meaning, say I invest millions in marketing and content development efforts to build up a following of a million people who are interested in my product. A competitor can now exploit that money and effort and specifically target those qualified buyers and try to snipe them away from me.

These are my fans! I did hard the work of getting them to subscribe to my fan page, I do not appreciate Facebook giving other competitors the chance to message to them with ads.

Here's Facebook's audience-buying tool, showing the page on which you can buy ads targeting Pepsi's fans:

It should be noted that Kim has a vested interest in clients who advertise on Google, a rival to Facebook.

A spokesperson for Facebook says that, in fact, advertisers cannot buy a rival's fan list -- only those users who list a brand as an "interest":

Targeting ads to all fans of a Page is the exclusive right of the Page's owner, through Connections targeting. This limit is in place to respect the time and resources brand owners put into developing and promoting their Facebook presence. Keywords from Page titles may be included in targetable Likes & Interests for other advertisers, just like any other profile content. However, Likes & Interests targeting won't include all the fans of Pages you don't own, which is why the estimated audience is often smaller than the number of fans of the Page, or certain terms may not be available at all.

And, of course, it's not as if Google doesn't allow something similar. Advertisers are allowed to buy ads that are triggered when someone searches for a rival company. But Kim believes there's a qualitative difference:

There are certainly some similarities but I think where it is different is as follows:

The stronger your brand, the less people will need to Google you. Google is generally more about helping people find stuff - when you know what you?re looking for and don?t know where to get it from.

Facebook is a bit different - the more I invest in building up a following, the more I?m exposing my customer list and making that available to competitors.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Stock ...

There are some blinding stocktrading robots out there which are rapidly changing the way that pro traders perform their analysis, too, so here is the right way to find one of the greatest of the finest. Many thousands of traders are welcoming trading robots to do the rational work for them. These programs only target penny shares and deliver literally the best stock picks to be found in the market because penny shares have a name of enormously jumping in price in an exceedingly short term due to their less expensive costs leave them open to more trading influence from the outside. Personally I suggest that you go with one of the low priced stock targeted stock trading Bots.

It is looking at trends of the past and applies that to realtime market information to try to find overlaps between the 2 to further research. Some automated stockmarket trading systems in particular target penny shares when searching for trading possibilities. This is effective as the market moves on in patterns which repeat themselves generally each 7 years typically. This is effective because penny stocks and shares are the least expensive, most erratic and wildly varying investments to be found in the market as it is way easier to persuade their position and price with less trading activity. Warren Buffett knows this idea well, and that made him the second-richest man in the world today.

Picking the ?gainers? and avoiding the ?losers? is the name of the game. Now would not that give you the benefit easily? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stockmarket dealing robotic systems do best. What if you had a method to tell which stocks are intending to make a murdering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without depending on brokers or crafty insider data. * There are new technologies out there now that will considerably raise the chances for successful share trading. They're also comparatively cheap and convenient to use. The fantastic thing about the stock dealing software is the incontrovertible fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and advise you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in.

If you're think about making an investment in a stock trader software then it might be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the numerous type and the advantages and drawbacks of every one before purchasing one. There are numerous online techniques that can be utilised to raise your data and experience about the exchange. There are online coaching courses, reading material, and even programs which may let you practice your investment talents. Trading software lets you nearly invest and practice everything you have learned. They are going to help you achieve your investment goals in addition to increasing your confidence. The seriousness of education can't be excessively stressed, particularly for newbie stock dealing.

CinemaNow adds Ultraviolet support to some of its movies

Bestbuy's CinemaNow has started to embed UltraViolet content into their video-streaming service. It's no huge surprise -- given that the retailer is a founding member of DECE -- but a good sign for anyone shoring up a collection of discs with UV digital content. CinemaNow identified compatible content with an Ultraviolet icon (seen above), while the service continues to gradually upgrade its SD content to big-screen friendly full HD. According to some early users, there's some teething issues with links to UV versions, however, suggesting CinemaNow's still tweaking the setup.

New drug overcomes resistance in patients with rare sarcoma, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? A new targeted drug demonstrated its ability to control metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor, an uncommon and life-threatening form of sarcoma, after the disease had become resistant to all existing therapies, report investigators at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who led the worldwide clinical trial.

The treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST, even in its advanced metastatic stage, has been dramatically improved with two oral targeted drugs -- imatinib (Gleevec) and sunitinib (Sutent). To date, these have represented the only two FDA-approved treatments with the proven ability to control GIST. However, in more than 85 percent of patients, GIST becomes resistant to these drugs after seven years and the disease worsens with fatal results.

The new study, whose results are being published in The Lancet, demonstrated that the oral drug regorafenib, which inhibits several cancer-promoting kinase enzymes, was able to control GIST for nearly four months longer than placebo in patients for whom Gleevec and Sutent were no longer effective, a result that was highly significant statistically.

"When added to best supportive care, regorafenib significantly improves disease control, as measured by progression-free survival time in patients with GIST after progression which represents failure of all other therapies," said George Demetri, MD, of Dana-Farber, principal investigator of this clinical trial.

Demonstrating the aggressive nature of this resistant disease, the study found that tumors objectively grew in less than a month, on average, in GIST patients who were initially randomized to receive a placebo. The study's "cross-over" design made it possible to treat those patients whose tumors grew, and 85 percent of the patients initially on placebo were able to receive regorafenib, which then controlled the disease in these patients as well.

Because of the study's cross-over design, Demetri said, it was not expected to prove that the patients initially randomized to receive regorafenib survived longer -- the researchers would have had to withhold the drug from the placebo patients to demonstrate that difference. "But there is no question that people are living longer" with regorafenib treatment, he said, based on the results of this trial.

An application to have regorafenib approved for use in resistant GIST is under an accelerated review by the Food and Drug Administration, Demetri said.

GIST is a rare form of sarcoma that develops in the gastrointestinal tract, mainly in the stomach and small intestine. GIST is estimated to affect more than 5,000 people per year in the United States and about 8,000 in Europe.

Regorafenib is a novel rationally designed drug manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals that was FDA-approved in September 2012 to treat metastatic colon cancer after failure of standard chemotherapy. It blocks several cancer-promoting enzymes called kinases, which spur runaway growth in GIST and other cancers.

The phase 3 international trial involved 199 treatment-resistant GIST patients at 57 hospitals in 176 countries. Of the 199 patients, 133 received a regorafenib pill daily for three weeks followed by a one-week break, while 66 received a matching placebo. The patients were monitored for at least one year after the trial began.

As for other targeted therapies, the drug did not often shrink tumors but controlled the disease for an average of 4.8 months before it progressed, while patients in the placebo group experienced less than one month (0.9 month) before the disease worsened. There was a high rate of adverse effects including high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, and redness, swelling, numbness and peeling of skin on the hands and feet. These side effects were managed by reducing or interrupting the regorafenib treatment, the report said.

A companion report in The Lancet said that the drug had a "modest" benefit in patients with metastatic colon cancer. A commentary by David Cunningham, MD, of the Royal Marsden Hospital in England, said, "In the relatively rare GIST, the case for routine use of this drug in patients following failure of existing treatments is strong."

Demetri added "We know that regorafenib can inhibit many of the mutated proteins and abnormal signals that cause this cancer, and the next step will be to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which this new treatment can control GIST after resistance appears to other 'targeted therapy' drugs for this aggressive malignancy."

The clinical trial was supported, in part, by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, as well as the Ludwig Center at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.
